Punjab Lawyer Arrested for Brutally Assaulting Mother
A shocking incident has come to light in Punjab’s Rupnagar, where a lawyer has been arrested for allegedly brutally thrashing his elderly mother. The police have registered a case against the lawyer, along with his wife and son, following a video that surfaced on social media capturing the horrifying assault.
Ankur Varma, the accused lawyer, was apprehended by the authorities on Saturday, and he was subsequently presented before the court. The court has remanded him to police custody for one day, according to the statement provided by Station House Officer Pawan Kumar.
The distressing video, which has gone viral on various social media platforms, unveils the lawyer’s grandson pouring water on his grandmother’s mattress. He then proceeds to complain to his parents, Ankur and Sudha, about his grandmother wetting the bed. In the footage, Ankur and Sudha can be seen approaching the scene before Ankur embarks on a merciless assault on his defenseless mother, repeatedly slapping and beating her while she lay helpless on the bed.
The lawyer’s abusive behavior escalates as he alternates between slapping her face and beating her back. At one point, Sudha is seen engaging in conversation with Asha Rani, the victim, leading to Ankur yanking his mother’s hair and violently shaking her head while continuing to subject her to a barrage of slaps and punches.
The harrowing video also captures Ankur shouting at his mother in a deeply disturbing manner.
Asha Rani, aged 73, resided in Rupnagar with her son and daughter-in-law. After her husband’s recent demise due to a heart attack, she confided in her daughter, Deepshikha, about Ankur and Sudha’s ill-treatment. Deepshikha managed to procure the footage from a CCTV camera installed in Asha Rani’s room, which prompted her to file a complaint with the police. Acting swiftly on the complaint, a police team, accompanied by members of an NGO, arrived at Asha Rani’s residence on Saturday to rescue her from the dire situation, as reported by NDTV.
The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the community, highlighting the pressing need to address the rising cases of elder abuse.
