Protests Marred by Violence in Kirkuk, Resulting in Three Kurdish Deaths
Protests held in the ethnically diverse city of Kirkuk in Iraq turned violent, leading to the unfortunate deaths of three Kurds and leaving 16 others injured. The clashes prompted local authorities to enforce a curfew in an attempt to restore order and quell the escalating tensions.
Ziad Khalaf, director of the local health authority, disclosed that two individuals were shot in the chest, while the third suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The victims included a 21-year-old man and two individuals aged 37. Additionally, Kurds, Arabs, and members of the security forces were among the injured, having been struck by gunfire, stones, or shattered glass.
The situation, characterized by rival demonstrations between Kurdish residents on one side and Turkmen and Arabs on the other, quickly spiraled out of control despite an enhanced security presence. Earlier in the day, the police had been deployed to act as a buffer between the opposing groups.
To disperse the Kurdish protesters, warning shots were fired, and in the aftermath, vehicles on a main avenue were set ablaze. Recognizing the gravity of the incidents, Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani called for a commission of inquiry into the events and pledged that those found accountable would face consequences.
This recent outbreak of violence comes after nearly a week of mounting tensions in Kirkuk. The city has long been a subject of dispute between the federal government in Baghdad and the autonomous Kurdistan region in the north. The unrest initially began when Arab and Turkmen demonstrators staged a sit-in near the headquarters of the Iraqi security forces in Kirkuk province. Rumors had circulated that the site was to be handed over to the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), leading to the demonstrators’ protest.
In response to the violence, Prime Minister Sudani swiftly implemented a curfew in Kirkuk and ordered extensive security operations in the affected areas. He also appealed to all parties involved to play their part in preventing further strife and safeguarding security, stability, and order in Kirkuk Governorate.
The events in Kirkuk highlight the complex and delicate nature of the ethnic dynamics in Iraq.
