A team of United Nations (UN)-backed engineers are using high-tech laser gear to scan historical sites in Ukraine, with the aim of protecting and preserving them during the ongoing war. According to UNESCO, at least 259 cultural and historic sites have been damaged by fighting in the country since the war began in February 2022. Using a device called the Zoller & Fröhlich Imager 5010X, the engineers are creating a perfect three-dimensional rendering of the historic sites as a way to protect them.  This technology is vital in preserving the country’s heritage, which has faced cycles of destruction from various countries in the past, including czarist Russia, Nazis during World War II, and the Soviet Union. The engineers hope this, coupled with international protection under the 1954 Hague Convention, will ensure these sites remain safe and are not lost forever.
