Pope Francis is in good general condition following his abdominal surgery for an incisional hernia, according to the Vatican. The pope had undergone a three-hour surgery to operate on a hernia in his abdominal wall, which may have been a result of a previous operation in Argentina. Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the director of Rome’s Gemelli Hospital‘s abdominal surgery department stated that the conditions treated by the surgery and the prior surgery of July 2021 were both benign, and all had been resolved. Religious leaders around the world have expressed their well-wishes and prayers for Pope Francis as he recovers in hospital. Pope Francis has been hospitalized three times in the past two years. He was hospitalized for four days in March for a lung infection and dealt with a recurrence of diverticulitis, a painful inflammation of bulges in the large intestine, earlier this year.
