Pope Francis: Blessings don’t require ‘moral perfection’

Pope Francis reaffirmed the Vatican’s stance on same-sex blessings, stating that moral perfection is not a prerequisite for receiving a blessing. In a recent address to the Vatican’s doctrinal office, the Holy Father highlighted the purpose of nonliturgical blessings for same-sex couples and others in irregular situations, such as divorced and remarried individuals. The Vatican’s declaration, Fiducia Supplicans, issued on December 18, 2023, authorized these blessings as a way to tangibly demonstrate the Church’s support for those seeking assistance on their faith journey.

In his remarks, Pope Francis clarified that the blessings are bestowed upon individuals who request them, rather than on the union itself. The Pope emphasized the importance of considering the unique circumstances, sensitivities, and locations of those seeking blessings. The intention is to show the Lord’s closeness and the Church’s support to those in various situations, regardless of moral imperfections.

The Fiducia Supplicans document has sparked widespread controversy and concerns about potential misinterpretations. Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, the bishop emeritus of Hong Kong, recently expressed his reservations about the document, stating that it creates confusion and leaves many questions unanswered. However, Pope Francis affirmed the importance of competent professionals within the Vatican’s doctrinal office to ensure adherence to canonical legislation, especially in cases of abuse by clergy.

The Pope also discussed the structural reforms he made to the dicastery in his 2022 motu proprio Fidem Servare, which divided the office into sections for doctrine and discipline. He emphasized the need for ministers to administer the sacraments with care and to reveal the grace they convey. Additionally, Pope Francis stressed the primacy of human dignity, quoting his apostolic exhortation Laudate Deum and urging Christians to defend human dignity above all else.

Regarding the mission of the Vatican’s doctrinal office, Pope Francis highlighted the importance of broader reflection and passionate communication of faith, especially among younger generations. He emphasized the centrality of the core message of the Gospel, or the kerygma, when addressing contemporary questions of meaning.

Pope Francis’s remarks on blessings and moral imperfection provide further clarity on the Vatican’s position. While the Fiducia Supplicans declaration continues to be debated, the Pope’s guidance offers direction on matters of faith, sacramental discipline, and the support of individuals in various situations.
