Oregon Revokes Decades-Old Ban, Allowing Self-Serve Gas Stations for the First Time in 72 Years

For the first time in 72 years, Oregon has ended its ban on self-serve gas stations, allowing motorists to pump gas into their own vehicles. Previously, Oregon was one of only two states, along with New Jersey, that prohibited motorists from pumping their own gas. The new law, signed by Gov. Tina Kotek, gives drivers the option to choose between self-service or having an attendant pump their gas.

The ban was originally put in place in 1951 due to safety concerns, particularly in regard to Oregon’s rainy weather. In recent years, the ban had been relaxed in certain circumstances, such as allowing self-serve gas in rural areas at night. However, the COVID-19 pandemic labor shortage played a significant role in the push to allow self-service gas stations across the entire state.

The decision to lift the ban was met with mixed reactions from Oregon residents. Supporters of self-serve gas stations believe it is a long-overdue change that brings the state in line with others. They argue that individuals should be able to pump their own gas and that it is a basic skill that everyone should possess. On the other hand, opponents worry that the shift could lead to job losses and the eventual elimination of full-service pumps. They also express concerns for older adults and individuals with disabilities who may rely on attendants for assistance.

In addition to the ban revocation, the new law imposes certain regulations. Gas stations cannot have more self-service pumps than full-service ones, and prices for both options must be the same. These measures aim to ensure fairness in the industry and prevent the elimination of full-service pumps altogether.

Unlike Oregon’s decision, New Jersey continues to uphold its ban on self-serve gas stations. However, the topic has surfaced in New Jersey’s legislature in the past, with proposals to end the ban being introduced, albeit unsuccessfully due to opposition.

With this change, Oregon joins the majority of states that allow self-serve gas stations. The decision reflects the evolving labor landscape and the need for greater flexibility in the industry. As motorists in Oregon adapt to this new freedom, the impact on jobs, safety, and convenience will become clearer.
