New York Attorney General to Investigate Fatal Police Shooting in the Bronx
The New York Attorney General, Letitia James, has announced that her office will conduct an investigation into a recent incident in the Bronx where a man was fatally shot by a police officer. The incident occurred on Saturday when the officer responded to an alleged robbery at a 7-Eleven store, where the suspect was reportedly threatening an employee with a knife.
According to NYPD Assistant Chief of Patrol Borough Bronx Benjamin Gurley, the suspect, identified as Mamady Cisse, was seen pacing around the store before an employee stepped outside momentarily. Upon the employee’s return, they discovered Cisse behind the cashier counter with a knife, alongside a visibly nervous female employee. Cisse was in the process of removing merchandise from behind the counter, prompting the employee to seek help from the nearby 45th Precinct.
Two officers arrived at the scene after being informed by the employee. One of the officers repeatedly commanded Cisse to remove his hands from his sweatshirt pocket, but the suspect did not comply. Instead, Cisse brandished the knife and lunged at one of the officers. In response to the imminent threat, the officer fired a single shot, hitting Cisse in the torso. Cisse was later pronounced dead at Jacobi Hospital.
The attorney general’s office noted that knives were found at the scene during the subsequent investigation. Both the attorney general’s office and the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division will be conducting separate investigations into the incident. However, the names of the officers involved have not been released to the public.
This marks the fourth known police killing in New York City in 2023, prompting the attorney general’s office to diligently review all police killings as mandated by law. In an effort to maintain transparency, body-worn camera footage and surveillance video of the incident will be analyzed.
The city’s medical examiner has yet to release a report on the cause of Cisse’s death. Meanwhile, the officer who discharged the fatal shot will not face immediate suspension, as confirmed by Assistant Chief Gurley when questioned by reporters.
The tragic incident has left the community in the Soundview section of the Bronx, where Cisse resided, in shock. Efforts to reach his family for comment have been unsuccessful.
As the investigation progresses, the focus will be on providing a balanced view and considering different perspectives. The attorney general’s office aims to ensure that justice is served and that the truth behind this unfortunate event is uncovered.
