North Korea’s Military Parade and Defiant Weapons Display Raise Tensions in East Asia
North Korea’s recent military parade and the display of its defiant weapons have heightened tensions in East Asia. The parade, held in Pyongyang to mark the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice, showcased North Korea’s determination to break through the closer-knit South Korea-U.S. alliance.
The presence of senior Chinese and Russian officials, including Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Li Hongzhong of the Chinese Communist Party, served as a grandstanding display of solidarity among these countries. This show of unity comes at a time when South Korea, the United States, and Japan are strengthening their trilateral security ties.
The military parade featured a range of nuclear-capable tactical and strategic weapons that can target both South Korea and the United States. Columns of tactical missiles and long-range cruise missiles were followed by the display of Hwasong-17 and Hwasong-18 intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), both capable of reaching the continental United States.
The Hwasong-18 missile, a new type of solid-propellant, raises concerns about a potential surprise ICBM launch due to its shorter pre-launch preparation time compared to liquid-fuel missiles. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) hailed the Hwasong-18 ICBM as the North’s most powerful core mainstay to protect the country against hostile forces.
Dubbed a monster for its size, the Hwasong-17 ICBM can carry multiple warheads and has a range of approximately 13,000 km. The North’s display of these weapons serves as a demonstration of the threat it poses to both South Korea and the United States.
In addition to the ballistic missiles, the presence of a strategic surveillance drone indicates North Korea’s efforts to acquire advanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) assets. The drone, resembling the U.S. Global Hawk unmanned high-altitude surveillance aircraft, suggests that Pyongyang is seeking to obtain similar capabilities.
Analysts argue that deploying such a drone would enhance the North’s military targeting capabilities, particularly regarding moving targets on the ground and at sea. By acquiring such a drone, North Korea aims to bolster its multilayered ISR infrastructure.
The participation of Chinese and Russian officials in the military parade highlights the close security partnerships among these countries. In contrast, South Korea, the United States, and Japan have been strengthening their trilateral partnership amidst rising threats from North Korea, China’s assertiveness, and Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.
By showcasing its tactical and strategic nuclear arms, North Korea seeks to assert its perceived legitimacy for their development. The country’s determination to strengthen its military capabilities raises concerns about regional stability and prompts Washington to provide stronger deterrence commitments to Seoul.
