New Mexico Governor Faces Backlash Over Gun Control Order

On Friday, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham implemented a public health order aimed at reducing gun violence and drug use. However, this order has already resulted in a wave of lawsuits challenging its validity and claiming a violation of Second Amendment rights. The order temporarily suspends open and concealed carry in Bernalillo County for 30 days, with the intention of creating a cooling-off period while the government addresses public safety concerns.

Four lawsuits have been filed against the governor’s order, with plaintiffs calling for an immediate halt to its implementation. One of the attorneys representing the National Association for Gun Rights claims that this order is overstepping its boundaries and poses a threat to democracy. He argues that it fails to address the issue of criminals obtaining firearms and suggests that the temporary order could potentially become permanent.

In addition to the lawsuits already filed, Senate and House Republicans are planning to initiate their own legal action. Senate Republican Leader Gregory Baca expresses concern over the governor’s previous health orders during the COVID crisis, which were repeatedly extended. He believes that such actions erode the public’s trust in the system and leadership of the state.

As these lawsuits make their way through the judicial system, the governor’s office remains silent on the matter. Despite the controversy and legal challenges, Governor Lujan Grisham is prepared for a showdown in court.

It is essential to strike a balance between addressing public safety concerns and upholding individual rights. While some argue that the governor’s order goes beyond her authority and infringes on Second Amendment rights, others believe that temporary measures like this can help prevent gun violence. The court will ultimately decide the outcome of this legal battle, determining whether the temporary suspension of open and concealed carry is constitutional.

As the controversy surrounding this public health order unfolds, it is a reminder of the importance of finding common ground and seeking solutions that prioritize both public safety and individual rights.
