New Huanggang Checkpoint to Slash Shenzhen-Hong Kong Customs Time, Boost Greater Bay Area Integration
The construction of the new Huanggang checkpoint is set to revolutionize cross-border travel between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. With completion expected in 2026, the new checkpoint will significantly reduce customs clearance time from Shenzhen to Hong Kong, cutting it from 20 minutes to a mere 5 minutes. Shenzhen’s port authorities have confirmed their commitment to achieving this ambitious goal.
The key to achieving such a swift customs clearance time lies in the adoption of the joint inspection, and one-time release customs-clearance mode. This innovative approach will streamline infrastructure connectivity and facilitate seamless personnel exchange across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The GBA is an ambitious project aimed at integrating the economic and social development of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao.
The new Huanggang checkpoint, covering a total area of 689,700 square meters, commenced construction in May 2021. So far, major progress has been made, including the completion of the foundation ditch, exterior support structure, and column piles. The focus now shifts to advancing the construction of the main structure.
The reopening of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong boundary control points on January 8 has witnessed a surge in demand for family visits, tourism, and business activities between the two cities. This increased interaction has promoted capital flow and accelerated the integrated development of Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and the entire GBA.
According to official statistics, from January 8 to August 6 of this year, the exit-entry passenger throughput at various checkpoints in Shenzhen reached an impressive 75.26 million, averaging 360,000 passengers per day. Notably, a significant proportion of these passengers, 52.57 million, originated from Hong Kong, accounting for around 70 percent of the total passenger volume.
The improved connectivity and enhanced customs efficiency offered by the new Huanggang checkpoint will undoubtedly have a transformative impact on the region. By providing a seamless travel experience between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, the new checkpoint will foster increased economic collaboration, strengthen cultural ties, and further integrate the Greater Bay Area.
