The Prime Minister of Nepal, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, is set to depart for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on November 29 to attend the 28th Conference of Parties (COP 28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. During the conference, Prime Minister Dahal will participate in the High-level Segment and World Climate Action Summit, where he will deliver a national statement and raise Nepal’s voice on climate change. In addition, he will host a high-level side event titled Call of the mountain: Who saves us from the climate crisis? to highlight Nepal’s stance on climate change and advocate for the mountain agenda in the COP negotiation process.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister Dahal will also engage in bilateral meetings with various heads of state, heads of government, and other high-ranking officials attending the conference. Following his participation at COP 28, the prime minister is scheduled to visit the Embassy of Nepal in Abu Dhabi, where he will address the Nepal-UAE Business Summit.
Accompanying Prime Minister Dahal on this significant trip will be his daughter Ganga, Minister for Forest and Environment Dr Birendra Prasad Mahato, and other senior government officials.
Prime Minister Dahal’s attendance at COP 28 emphasizes Nepal’s commitment to tackling climate change and promoting sustainable practices. With Nepal’s unique position as home to numerous mountains and vulnerable ecosystems, the prime minister’s presence at the conference will provide a platform to advocate for the needs and challenges faced by mountainous regions in the face of the climate crisis.
This visit holds great importance for Nepal as it seeks to address climate change issues and contribute to the global dialogue on climate action. By participating in high-level discussions and hosting a dedicated side event, Prime Minister Dahal aims to ensure that Nepal’s concerns and aspirations are heard and incorporated into the COP negotiation process.
