NATO members are purchasing 1,000 Patriot missiles to enhance their air defense capabilities in response to the growing threat from Russia. The alliance’s chief, Jens Stoltenberg, applauded the decision, stating that the investment would bolster the security of the alliance. Several NATO allies, including the United States and Germany, have already deployed US-made Patriot systems to Ukraine, successfully intercepting Russia’s hypersonic missile attacks. With the contract estimated at $5.5 billion, the procurement agency revealed that the production of Patriot missiles would be ramped up in Europe. The announcement comes as Moscow continues to launch deadly missile and drone strikes against Ukraine. Stoltenberg emphasized the importance of modern air defenses, highlighting the need to scale up ammunition production for the security of Ukraine and NATO member states. The deal involves the establishment of a missile production facility in Germany through a joint venture between MBDA, a German company, and Raytheon, a part of the US group RTX. This self-sufficiency in missile production showcases the effectiveness of European cooperation. In addition to the missiles, the contract includes test equipment, spare parts, and future maintenance provisions. The cost of each Patriot missile is estimated at $4 million. The procurement aims to replenish Western stocks, which have been depleted due to deliveries to Ukraine, prompting the need for assistance from allies such as Japan. The move seeks to ensure the preparedness and security of NATO member states in the face of Russia’s aggressive actions.
