Murphy’s Tavern in Rumson has a rich history dating back to the Prohibition era when it operated as a speakeasy. Fast forward to today, and it has transformed into a thriving licensed bar that draws in locals and visitors alike. Co-owned by Robb McMahon and Heather Racioppi, the tavern has become a beloved establishment in the community.
In the early days, opening a speakeasy meant operating under the radar due to the illegal nature of alcohol during Prohibition. As McMahon explains, there was no grand opening for Murphy’s Tavern because everything they did was against the law. However, once the Volstead Act was repealed in 1933, speakeasy owners like McMahon and Racioppi had the opportunity to obtain a provisional license and transition into a fully licensed bar.
McMahon’s entry into the bar business was through his passion for music. Starting with jazz and classical music, he eventually transitioned to rock and roll, which proved to be a lucrative endeavor. McMahon soon found himself bartending at the venues where he performed, as live music was a staple in many bars during the 1980s.
Racioppi, on the other hand, initially pursued a career in television production after graduating from Rutgers University. However, she soon discovered that bartending offered better financial prospects. While she enjoyed bartending, she knew she would eventually need the security of benefits and a retirement plan. This led her to the world of bar business.
The paths of McMahon and Racioppi converged when they both found themselves working in the same bartending circle in Red Bank. One night, McMahon suggested that Racioppi should join him at Murphy’s Tavern a few nights a week. Recognizing their wide network of acquaintances, they saw the potential in the bar and eventually took over as owners. That was 19 years ago, and Murphy’s Tavern is still going strong.
Known for their popular pint of Guinness, Murphy’s Tavern also boasts a diverse selection of bourbons, old-fashioned drinks, and now high-end tequilas for the summer season. The co-owners have done an impressive job of growing the business over the years, and while they have never had much help, they are considering bringing in additional staff to support their efforts.
Looking ahead, McMahon and Racioppi have built a loyal customer base that appreciates the consistent and welcoming atmosphere of the bar. Their goal is to maintain the essence of Murphy’s Tavern, keeping it true to its roots while embracing progress and growth.
