MTA Platform Barrier Installation Faces Delays Amid Rising Subway Attacks
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is facing significant delays in the installation of platform barriers, which aim to protect subway riders. This revelation comes shortly after the most recent incident of a straphanger falling victim to a random pushing attack.
According to the MTA, the contract to install test barriers at three stations will not be awarded until at least December, due to unexplained delays. The delay is causing concern among officials and advocates who have been pushing for the installation of these protective barriers.

The recent incident at the Fifth Avenue-53rd Street station, where a woman was pushed into a moving train, further highlights the need for these safety measures. The suspect, Sabir Jones, has a history of mental illness and encounters with law enforcement.
Advocates have long been urging the MTA to install platform doors to prevent both accidental falls onto the tracks and malicious attacks. Major cities like London and Paris have already implemented such barriers in their subway systems and have even included them in new transit projects.
The MTA had previously resisted the installation of platform barriers and released a comprehensive report outlining the challenges and feasibility considerations involved. However, following the tragic death of Michelle Go in 2022, MTA chairman Janno Lieber succumbed to political pressure and reversed the agency’s stance.

Tim Minton, the MTA’s top spokesman, stated that requests for proposals have been issued for platform screen doors, which could be funded by congestion pricing.

Additionally, the revamp of the Broadway Junction subway hub, aimed at increasing accessibility for disabled individuals and those with strollers, is now expected to be delayed by five months. However, the total cost for this project has been slightly reduced.
Danny Pearlstein, the top spokesman for Riders Alliance, emphasized the need for promptness throughout the MTA’s projects. He stressed the agency’s massive requirements and the importance of meeting them in a timely manner.
