Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi recently engaged in a phone conversation to discuss the Israel-Hamas conflict and express their concerns over the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the region. Both leaders emphasized the need for early restoration of peace and stability, as well as the facilitation of humanitarian assistance to those in need.
During the conversation, the two leaders also deliberated on the implications of the current situation for West Asia and the world. Prime Minister Modi had previously held phone conversations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas to address the conflict that was triggered by unprecedented attacks on Israel by Hamas militants. Israel responded with a massive counter-offensive.
The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that both Prime Minister Modi and President El-Sisi expressed their shared concern over terrorism, violence, and the loss of civilian lives. It also reiterated India’s longstanding and principled position on the Israel-Palestine issue. The Prime Minister further emphasized India’s development partnership and humanitarian aid for the people of Palestine.
The international community has been increasingly alarmed by the plight of civilians in Gaza amidst Israel’s retaliatory attacks. In response, India sent over 38 tonnes of relief material, including medicines and medical equipment, to assist the people of Palestine.
President El-Sisi’s spokesperson confirmed that Egypt is actively coordinating regional and international efforts to push for a ceasefire. President El-Sisi stressed the critical need for unified international action to find a prompt diplomatic solution, including the establishment of an immediate humanitarian truce and unhindered delivery of aid to Gaza. He warned of the humanitarian and security repercussions of a ground offensive in the Gaza Strip and urged the protection of civilian lives.
Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the excellent state of bilateral relations between India and Egypt and expressed their commitment to further strengthen cooperation in various areas.
