Three Minnesota men are facing charges for their involvement in a social media gun distribution ring that illegally distributed machine guns. Rafael Wesley, Kyrees Johnson, and Avont Drayton have been charged with unlawful possession of machine guns. The investigation began in March 2023 when law enforcement suspected a Snapchat group called BLICCS&STICCS3 of trafficking machine guns, firearms, and drugs in the Twin Cities area.
Screenshots and videos were obtained by authorities, showing members of the group selling, promoting, and using machine gun conversion devices (MCDs). These devices convert semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic ones and are regulated under the National Firearms Act.
Undercover officers conducted six controlled buys between March and June 2023. In one instance, Wesley offered to trade a gun for Glock switches, a type of MCD, and sold three switches for $1,000. Another buy involved Wesley and Johnson selling three more switches. Drayton sold a Glock without a serial number and a 3D-printed drop-in MCD for an AR rifle. He also sold two more drop-in MCDs in a separate transaction.
Records reveal that Johnson has prior felony convictions that prohibit him from possessing firearms or ammunition, while Wesley and Drayton are subject to court-imposed restrictions. All three men had their initial court appearances on Thursday and Friday.
This incident highlights the alarming impact of social media platforms in facilitating illegal activities, particularly in the distribution of firearms. Law enforcement agencies must remain vigilant and take swift action to dismantle such networks and prevent the circulation of dangerous weapons. The collaboration between undercover officers and the diligent efforts of authorities in this case demonstrate the commitment to maintaining public safety and countering illicit gun trafficking.
It is important to note that the charges against the accused are allegations, and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The legal process will follow its course, ensuring a fair and impartial trial.
This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing issue of gun violence in the United States and the need for stricter regulations and enforcement to minimize its occurrences. It also underscores the significance of public awareness and engagement in reporting suspicious activities that could potentially jeopardize community safety.
Authorities are determined to combat illegal gun distribution and protect the well-being of the public. As the investigation progresses, it is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and report any information that may aid in law enforcement efforts to dismantle these networks. Together, we can work towards a safer society where the misuse and illegal distribution of firearms are no longer a threat.
