Minneapolis Police Department Faces Staffing Challenges Amidst Criticism

Minneapolis’ police department is facing criticism and staffing challenges as concerns grow over the number of officers available to protect the city’s residents. With a population of 425,000, there are currently only 517 police officers assigned to the task. This has raised questions about whether this is an adequate number to ensure the safety and security of the community.

The Minneapolis Police Department is authorized to have 888 officers, but due to funding limitations, it is currently staffed for only 731 officers. Even if all officers were on duty simultaneously, each would be responsible for protecting 823 residents. The scarcity of police personnel has become a pressing issue, and residents are calling for more officers to be hired.

Sherral Schmidt, president of the Minneapolis Police Federation, expressed concerns about the limited number of officers available for duty. However, it is important to note that the Minneapolis Police Department declined to comment and directed inquiries to the mayor’s office. Unfortunately, Mayor Jacob Frey has not responded to multiple requests for comment regarding the staffing situation.

The decrease in police personnel comes after a turbulent period for the Minneapolis Police Department. In 2018, there were 892 sworn officers, but over the years, this number has dwindled. The aftermath of the tragic killing of George Floyd by former MPD officers led to widespread protests, riots, and extensive property damage. In response, the Minneapolis City Council voted to divert $6 million from the police department to public safety and reduced the authorized size of the force from 888 to 750, resulting in a 15.5% reduction.

Minneapolis City Council Member Andrew Johnson, who represents the 12th Ward, acknowledges the need for additional police officers in the city. Johnson mentioned that funding has been allocated to increase the number of officers, but hiring challenges exist not only in Minneapolis but nationwide. Efforts have been made to attract more officers, such as boosting compensation and implementing various recruitment strategies.

Federal data from the Department of Justice reveals that there has been a 34% drop in MPD officers between 2019 and 2023. This decline has added to the staffing challenges currently faced by the department.

In June 2023, the Department of Justice determined that the Minneapolis Police Department, along with the city, engaged in a pattern of conduct violating the U.S. Constitution and federal law. As a result, a court-enforceable consent decree was established, and an independent monitor was appointed. The DOJ found instances of the MPD’s use of excessive force, discriminatory practices, violations of free speech rights, and discrimination against individuals with behavioral health disabilities.

The staffing shortages and criticisms faced by the Minneapolis Police Department underscore the need to address and rectify these issues. The city’s safety and security rely on having an adequate number of officers to serve and protect the community. Efforts to recruit and hire more officers have been initiated, but challenges persist. As Minneapolis continues to grapple with these problems, finding a resolution that benefits both the residents and the police department remains a top priority.
