Mexico’s Supreme Court Rules Abortion Legal Nationwide

Mexico’s Supreme Court has ruled to eliminate the criminalization of abortion throughout the country, deeming the existing legal framework unconstitutional. The decision came in response to an injunction filed by the organization Grupo de Información en Reproducción Elegida (GIRE). Public clinics and hospitals are now obligated to provide abortion services free of charge. The ruling also stated that women who have been prosecuted or sentenced for having an abortion should be acquitted, and retroactive effects should apply to those currently facing legal consequences. However, reforms to penal codes in various states are necessary to ensure that no woman is subjected to criminalization for seeking an abortion.
