The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called on US President Joe Biden to urge India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to end the media crackdown and release six journalists arbitrarily detained in retaliation for their work. The CPJ stated that India is the world’s largest democracy but also one of the most dangerous countries for the media. Ahead of Modi’s official state visit to the US, the watchdog published a full-page ad in the Washington Post highlighting that Indian journalists are facing physical violence, harassment, bogus lawsuits, and hate campaigns on social media. The statement urged India to live up to its democracy by ensuring a free and independent media. CPJ President Jodie Ginsberg added that the crackdown had increased since Modi came to power in 2014. Modi arrived in the US on 21 June for his first official state visit.
