Mayor Mike Duggan, along with his team, is committed to revitalizing Detroit by focusing on rebuilding neighborhoods and tackling crime. Despite the challenges the city has faced with the decline of industries and the exodus of businesses, Duggan remains optimistic about Detroit’s future and is determined to improve the lives of its residents.

During a rare one-on-one interview with WDIV-TV Anchor/Reporter Demond Fernandez, Mayor Duggan emphasized the importance of community initiatives and the role they play in Detroit’s resurgence. Growing up in the city himself, Duggan understands the hardships that residents have endured and aims to bring back the vibrancy and opportunities that were once abundant.

Key to this revitalization effort are strong block clubs and neighborhood associations, which have proven to be catalysts for neighborhood revitalization. The city has witnessed progress in various areas, with over 200 local parks being upgraded, new commercial corridors being built, and streetscapes being enhanced. Some neighborhoods experiencing renewed energy and momentum include East Warren, West Warren, Kercheval & Van Dyke, Livernois, West McNichols, and Rosa Parks.

The issue of vacant homes also remains a priority for Mayor Duggan. Over the years, the city has made significant strides in addressing this problem by removing, rehabilitating, or reoccupying dangerous properties. The Land Bank, which previously owned 45,000 abandoned houses, now only has 5,000 in its possession. Additionally, millions of dollars in funding have been allocated to community groups through neighborhood improvement grants, while programs like Motor City Match are supporting entrepreneurs in opening new businesses.

However, one crucial challenge that the city continues to face is high levels of violence. Mayor Duggan has expressed his determination to combat this issue, acknowledging the need to make the city safer. While he recognizes the efforts of the Detroit Police Department, Duggan believes that tackling the root causes of crime requires a collaborative approach. A new Community Violence Intervention partnership involving six local groups has been established to address this urgent matter.

It is evident that Detroit is on a path to rejuvenation, with various initiatives and programs aimed at rebuilding neighborhoods and creating a safer city. Mayor Mike Duggan’s vision for Detroit is rooted in the hope and optimism he sees through the eyes of a child growing up in the city. By focusing on community engagement, revitalization efforts, and targeted crime reduction strategies, Duggan and his team are striving to make Detroit a thriving and livable city once again.
