The advertisement for the event indicated a scheduled giveaway at 4 pm in a local park, but eager fans started lining up as early as 1:30 pm. By 3 pm, the crowd had swelled significantly and began to grow unruly. Some attendees expressed their hopes of receiving computers for livestreaming or brand-new PlayStations.
Within a short span, an estimated 2,000 young people flocked to Union Square and its surroundings, eager to catch a glimpse of the influential personality whose massive following extended across platforms like Twitch, YouTube, and Instagram.
As the crowd grew, some individuals resorted to violence, throwing objects from a nearby construction site at both the attendees and the swiftly dispatched police officers.
Television footage and news images captured the scene of rioters surrounding and damaging vehicles, leading to injuries and chaos.
Chief Jeffrey Maddrey of the New York City Police addressed the media during a press briefing and expressed his concern about the severity of the situation, saying, People were bleeding from their heads, from their faces … people were suffering out here. There were a lot of people, it was uncontrolled… a lot of young people got hurt.
The situation escalated to a point where a thousand police officers were required to disperse the crowd and restore order.
Multiple individuals, including Kai Cenat, were arrested in connection with the violent incidents. Cenat was taken in for questioning but not officially detained at the time.
