Marine Pilot Identified in Fatal Jet Crash at MCAS Miramar
In a tragic incident at MCAS Miramar, the U.S. Marine Corps has identified the pilot who lost his life in a jet crash. Maj. Andrew Mettler, known as Simple Jack, was piloting the F/A-18 fighter jet when it crashed in a remote area of the base.
The news of Maj. Mettler’s death has left the Marine Corps deeply saddened. Maj. Gen. Scott Benedict, the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Commanding General, expressed his condolences to the family, loved ones, and friends of Maj. Mettler. Maj. Benedict recalled flying with Simple Jack and commended his skill and leadership. Maj. Mettler’s passing has left a void within the Fighting Bengals squadron where he excelled.
The search and rescue team recovered Maj. Mettler’s body at the crash site on MCAS Miramar the following morning. An official statement from the Marines conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the Marine’s family during this difficult time. As per military protocol, the identity of the pilot was withheld until the next-of-kin were notified.
The cause of the crash remains uncertain at this stage, with no indications of property damage on the ground. The aircraft was assigned to the Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron [VMFA (AW)] 224.
San Diego Police initially responded to the incident but handed over the investigation to MCAS Miramar officials. As the investigation is ongoing, no further information is available at this time.
