Mar-a-Lago Property Manager Pleads Not Guilty in Trump Classified Documents Case
Carlos De Oliveira, the property manager at Mar-a-Lago, has entered a plea of not guilty in the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump in Florida. This marked De Oliveira’s third court appearance for an arraignment and plea.
Initially, there were delays as De Oliveira failed to secure a local attorney, which is required in the Southern District of Florida. However, criminal defense lawyer Larry Donald Murrell Jr. made the plea on his behalf. The proceedings took place in the Alto Lee Adams, Sr. U.S. Courthouse in Fort Pierce, Fla.
Accompanied by his lawyer, De Oliveira appeared somber and wore dark glasses throughout the court session. The arraignment lasted roughly three minutes, and he will now face trial before a jury.
De Oliveira’s charges include conspiracy to obstruct justice, lying to the FBI, and destroying evidence. The Department of Justice has accused him of attempting to delete security footage that investigators were seeking regarding Trump’s alleged hoarding of classified material.
In light of these developments, it is worth noting that Trump himself is facing his fourth indictment, this time in Georgia on 41 felony counts. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has charged Trump and 18 of his allies with racketeering charges, alleging that they tried to corrupt the 2020 election by subverting President Joe Biden’s victory in Georgia.
De Oliveira, who worked at Mar-a-Lago for over a decade, starting as a maintenance worker and later becoming a valet, was promoted to the role of property manager in January 2022. The indictment alleges that he instructed an IT employee to delete security footage at the behest of the boss after investigators had subpoenaed it.
The classified documents trial, presided over by Federal Judge Aileen Cannon, is scheduled to begin on May 20, 2024, in Fort Pierce. Cannon, a Trump appointee, has ordered De Oliveira’s lawyer, Murrell, to obtain a security clearance by August 23 so that he can consult with his client regarding the classified documents in question.
As these legal proceedings continue, it is interesting to note that polling shows the numerous cases against Trump have not adversely affected his popularity in the polls. Instead, they seem to have strengthened his frontrunner status in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.
