Manipur Extends Mobile Internet Ban Amidst Violent Protests

The Manipur government has decided to extend the ban on mobile internet services in the state for another five days until October 11 due to concerns that social media may be used by anti-social elements to incite violence. This ban was initially implemented on September 26 following student protests over the deaths of a 17-year-old girl student and a 20-year-old youth. The protests escalated into violence, resulting in over 100 students being injured during clashes with security forces.

The decision to extend the ban was announced by Commissioner (Home) T. Ranjit Singh, who stated that there is a fear that certain individuals may exploit social media platforms to disseminate images, hate speech, and videos inciting public unrest, which could have serious consequences for law and order in Manipur.

However, the ban has sparked criticism from student bodies and civil society groups, who argue that it is disproportionate and negatively impacting the lives of ordinary citizens. They claim that this measure infringes upon their rights and hampers their ability to engage with the online world.

Amidst these developments, a student body in the Senapati district has imposed an indefinite economic blockade in protest against the ban on mobile internet services. As a result, numerous vehicles transporting goods have become stranded along the Manipur-Nagaland border.

The ban on mobile internet services in Manipur continues to face opposition due to concerns of overreach and the impact on the general population. While the government maintains that it is necessary to prevent the spread of misinformation and curb potential violence, critics argue that there should be a more targeted approach to address the underlying issues.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the Manipur government will respond to these criticisms and whether alternative measures will be implemented to address the concerns raised by both sides. In the meantime, the ban on mobile internet services persists, leaving the people of Manipur with limited access to online communication and information.
