Man Fatally Shot while Riding Bicycle in East Birmingham
In a tragic incident, a man was shot and killed while riding his bicycle on a street in east Birmingham. The incident occurred early Tuesday in the 7000 block of First Avenue South, prompting a swift response from the East Precinct officers. The city’s gunfire detection system, Shot Spotter, alerted the authorities to multiple rounds fired in the area.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered the victim lying unresponsive in the middle of the road. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service rushed the man to UAB Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead, according to Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
Investigations suggest that the victim was cycling when an unidentified gunman approached him and opened fire. Officer Fitzgerald noted that, at present, this incident does not seem to be a random act of violence.
