Maine Shooter Found Dead, Leaving Community Yearning for Closure

The suspected shooter who caused havoc in Lewiston, Maine, resulting in the deaths of 18 people, has been found dead, leaving the community desperate for closure. Law enforcement officials confirmed late Friday night that Robert Card, the prime suspect in the tragedy, was discovered deceased. Maine Governor Janet Mills shared the news during a subsequent press conference. She informed reporters, Maine State Police have located the body of Robert Card in Lisbon. He is dead. I’ve called President Biden to inform him about this news.

According to Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sauschuck, it appeared that Card had taken his own life. The precise time of his death remains unknown. Card is believed to have carried out the killings and injured 13 others at a bar and a bowling alley, prompting a shelter-in-place order that remained in effect until early Friday. The victims’ ages ranged from 14 to 76 years old.

The body of the suspect was discovered at Maine Recycling, where he had previously worked, according to Leo Madden, the company’s owner. The news of Card’s death has left many seeking closure, including Auburn City Councilor Leroy Walker, who lost his son in the shootings. Walker conveyed his disappointment through a text message, stating, The feeling with me is no closure. I was hoping for them to find him alive.

This incident marks the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in over a year, since the tragic events in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and two teachers were fatally shot at a school in May 2022. The people of Maine are now grappling with the immense pain caused by this recent tragedy.

Senator Angus King expressed his condolences and highlighted the resiliency of the Maine community. He stated, It will take a long, long time to process this pain, but Maine people have grit, resolve, and heart, and we will come together through this difficult grieving period and hope for brighter, calmer days.

In light of this devastating event, it is crucial to prioritize mental health and support for those affected. If you or someone you know requires assistance, please reach out to the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988, call the National Suicide Prevention hotline at 1-800-273-8255, or text ‘Home’ to 741741 to contact the Crisis Text Line anytime.

As the community mourns the loss of innocent lives, they will navigate the challenges of piecing their lives back together. The road to healing may be long, but with support and resilience, they aim to rebuild and move forward towards a brighter future.
