YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning County commissioners have approved a $1 million investment from the county’s general fund for the Valley Vision 2050 initiative, a regional economic development project. The funding will support the creation of a long-term vision for the Mahoning Valley. The initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Mahoning Valley Partnership, consisting of five economic development organizations: Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, Valley Partners, Western Reserve Port Authority, Youngstown Foundation, and Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber.

Commissioner David Ditzler emphasized the importance of looking toward the future and setting the stage for upcoming generations. The Valley Vision 2050 initiative aims to address current challenges and prevent future problems by laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth in the area. Ditzler expressed his hope that this investment will have a positive and lasting impact on Mahoning County and the Mahoning Valley.

The initiative draws upon a study conducted by Ernst & Young, which involved focus groups, interviews, and collaboration with numerous organizations to gather ideas on enhancing economic competitiveness in the region. The Valley Vision committee, which will oversee the initiative, aims to incorporate stakeholder input from a variety of sources, including the county commissioners.

According to Guy Coviello, president and CEO of the Regional Chamber, the Valley Vision 2050 initiative represents a unique collaboration among the public, private, and philanthropic sectors. The project’s objectives include nurturing economic growth, improving quality of life, and creating family-sustaining wage jobs. Factors such as job numbers, poverty rates, educational attainment, and the overall well-being of underserved neighborhoods will be used to measure the success of the initiative.

The Trumbull County commissioners are currently considering whether to join the Valley Vision 2050 program by approving funds. Commissioner Denny Malloy expressed support, while Commissioner Niki Frenchko rejected providing additional funding. Commissioner Mauro Cantalamessa remains undecided, even after Mahoning County’s approval.

Valley Vision 2050 also seeks to highlight the region’s positive aspects, such as job opportunities, educational options, and entertainment offerings, in order to attract individuals, businesses, and cultural events to the area. The initiative aims to prioritize and support small businesses, nonprofit organizations, and arts and cultural districts.

By investing in the Valley Vision 2050 initiative, Mahoning County is demonstrating its commitment to shaping a prosperous and sustainable future for the region. The collaborative effort involving various stakeholders reflects a unified vision for economic growth and improved quality of life in the Mahoning Valley.
