Irate villagers in Karjat-Hastpokhari, Maharashtra have ‘lifted up’ a newly-laid road to draw attention to its substandard quality. The road was reportedly constructed under the Prime Minister Rural Road Scheme, but the villagers accuse local contractor Rana Thakur of carrying out a ‘bogus’ job. Video footage of the incident has gone viral on social media, with villagers seen hoisting up the road to reveal a cloth carpet underneath. They contend that although asphalt had been poured on top of the cloth, the structure was shoddy and unstable. There has been no comment so far from District Collector or Zilla Parishad authorities.
