Madison Approves Funding for Dashed Green Bike Lanes at UW Campus – Improving Safety and Accessibility

The City of Madison’s Transportation Commission made a significant decision last Wednesday by approving funding for various aspects of the Safe Streets Madison project. This project aims to enhance safety and accessibility around the University of Wisconsin (UW) campus. Nine intersections within District 8, which encompasses a sizable portion of the campus, will be beneficiaries of this initiative. The approved funding will allow for the installation of painted green lines on high-traffic bike lanes and the implementation of traffic signs that caution drivers to be aware of pedestrians and cyclists.

The driving force behind this project is District 8 Alderman, MGR Govindarajan, who has been actively working on it since assuming office in mid-April. As a UW student himself, Govindarajan understands the challenges faced by his fellow students navigating the city’s streets. He noted that many students, especially those new to biking in a larger city, tend to ride on sidewalks or in the wrong direction on streets. His aim is to address these issues effectively.

The specific improvements planned for the nine intersections include the addition of green-painted bike lanes and the installation of new traffic signs. These signs will serve as reminders for drivers to watch out for pedestrians and cyclists as they cross the streets. The total cost of these projects is estimated to be $59,000, which will be sourced from the city’s 2023 budget.

While celebrating this progress, Govindarajan emphasized that he views it as just the beginning. He hopes that the city will continue to invest more in students and downtown areas, especially concerning bike paths. He expressed his desire to allocate additional funding, particularly for University Avenue, a major spot where students often struggle with left turns. Govindarajan acknowledges that proactive measures are needed to address difficult intersections throughout Madison in the future.

The university campus experiences the highest rates of bike-pedestrian accidents within the city. Therefore, these financial investments by the local government signal a positive step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of students and other road users.

In conclusion, Madison’s Transportation Commission has approved funding for the implementation of dashed green bike lanes and traffic signs at nine high-traffic intersections around the UW campus. This project aims to enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. With additional funding, further improvements can be made to address the challenges faced by students and the community within the city of Madison.
