Macron made the comments at Europe’s largest tech event, Vivatech, saying that regulations were being imposed too slowly and highlighting that Europe was behind the UK, China and the US in AI innovation. The comments coincide with lawmakers in Europe signing the world’s first set of comprehensive rules for AI, although negotiations still need to be held to take the rules forward. Macron called for further discussion involving UNESCO, the UN cultural agency, and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and said he would hold a meeting with Elon Musk to discuss artificial intelligence and social media regulation.
