LGBTQIA+ Community Mobilizes for Rights amidst Concerns

Recent research conducted by The Harris Poll reveals that members of the LGBTQIA+ community in the United States are mobilizing and taking political action to defend their rights. The study, titled Inclusive Insights: LGBTQIA+ & Advocacy, surveyed over 1,100 LGBTQIA+ adults aged 18 and over and found that the community harbors concerns about the potential threats to their rights, but remains optimistic about the future.

The research indicates that an overwhelming majority of LGBTQIA+ individuals (98%) believe that their rights are in jeopardy due to new laws, court verdicts, and political rhetoric surrounding topics such as marriage equality, trans athletes, gender-neutral bathrooms, and drag queen shows. Four out of five respondents expressed nervousness about their rights as LGBTQIA+ individuals and believed that certain groups within the community are often overlooked or picked on by politicians and lawmakers.

Despite these concerns, the LGBTQIA+ community is demonstrating remarkable activism. The survey found that 93% of respondents have taken some form of political action to defend their rights, apart from voting. Moreover, the study revealed that the community’s commitment to political engagement goes beyond the ballot box. Over 80% of respondents expressed concern about drag queen bans and feared that such bans could lead to the erosion of more rights. Additionally, the study examined the challenges faced by queer BIPOC (Black, indigenous, people of color) and transgender individuals within the community, highlighting the difficulties they encounter in finding understanding communities and resources.

The research emphasized the political involvement of younger generations, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, who are twice as likely to engage in activism compared to older members of the LGBTQIA+ community. This involvement includes volunteering for campaigns, attending political events, donating money, and even considering running for political office.

Despite the current political climate, the LGBTQIA+ community remains hopeful. A substantial majority (84%) expressed hope for improvements in LGBTQIA+ rights, with approximately two-thirds believing that these improvements could occur within the next five years.

The findings from The Harris Poll shed light on the concerns and activism within the LGBTQIA+ community. The study’s insights contribute to understanding the ongoing fight for LGBTQIA+ rights and the community’s determination to preserve and expand their rights. As societal progress continues, the research highlights the community’s belief that positive change is not only possible but also likely.
