New Trend: Japan and Korea’s Startup-Big Conglomerate Partnership Model Spreading Worldwide, South Korea

0

In today’s evolving entrepreneurial landscape, a new model of collaboration is reshaping the tech industry in Japan and Korea. The traditional narrative of startups disrupting and replacing large conglomerates is being flipped on its head as small firms are now working hand in hand with industry giants like Hyundai, Samsung, and Sony. This innovative approach, supported by government initiatives, is fostering a unique environment where David meets Goliath to drive forward innovation and economic growth.

By leveraging the expertise and resources of established conglomerates, startups gain access to mentorship, sales channels, and vital capital they may struggle to secure independently. At the same time, conglomerates benefit from fresh ideas and products, positioning themselves at the forefront of technological advancements. Through programs like K-Startup Grand Challenge and J-Startup, the governments of Japan and Korea are spearheading this collaborative effort, serving as matchmakers between entrepreneurs and industry leaders.

The emphasis on partnership over competition reflects a strategic shift in global tech hubs towards fostering innovation through unity rather than disruption. As this model gains traction, countries worldwide are taking note, with major players like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google already adopting similar approaches in their quest for sustained growth and competitiveness. By embracing startup-conglomerate collaboration, nations are not only cultivating a robust ecosystem for technological development but also safeguarding the future of their economic prosperity.

UK PM Sunak Defends Conservative Record Amid Election Polls

0

London, Jun 30 (AP) UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Sunday dismissed suggestions that his party was headed to defeat in the July 4 general election, using one of his final televised appearances to defend the Conservatives’ record on the economy.

Sunak told the BBC that he believed he’d still be in power by the end of the week, despite opinion polls that have found the Conservatives trailing far behind the opposition Labour Party of Keir Starmer.

I’m fighting very hard, Sunak said. And I think people are waking up to the real danger of what a Labour government means.

While he acknowledged that the last few years had been difficult for everyone,’ Sunak declared it was completely and utterly wrong to suggest that Britain’s place in the world has diminished since Brexit.

It’s entirely wrong, this kind of declinist narrative that people have of the UK. I wholeheartedly reject, he said. It (the UK) is a better place to live than it was in 2010.’

After 14 years of Conservative-led governments, many voters blame the party for Britain’s cost-of-living crisis, long waiting lists for health care, high levels of immigration and the dislocations caused by Britain’s departure from the European Union.

Sunak, who became prime minister in October 2022, has tried to silence his critics by arguing that his policies have begun to solve those problems and warning that Starmer, the Labour leader, would raise taxes if his party wins the election. (AP)

England’s Anthony Gordon ready for heroics after bike accident ahead of Slovakia clash, UK

England face Slovakia in a crucial Euro 2024 clash in Gelsenkirchen as the Three Lions face a battle to secure a quarterfinal spot.

The Three Lions finished top of Group C, despite only picking up five points from three games, and Gareth Southgate has come under pressure to rotate his team for their Round of 16 showdown with Slovakia.

Southgate only made one change to his starting XI, with Kobbie Mainoo coming in for Conor Gallagher. But England’s lack of balance and penetration in attack has led to plenty calling for Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon to feature.

The former Everton star has only played a few minutes at Euro 2024 but a bizarre injury did not block him from being named in the matchday squad against Slovakia.

Despite only playing a cameo role so far at the tournament, Gordon was an initial injury concern for Southgate, following a cycling accident after the group stages.

As part of a squad bike ride at the England training base, Gordon fell of his bike, and suffered gashes to his face, arms and hands.

The 23-year-old admitted the accident occurred as he try to film himself whilst cycling and the Magpies star has been mocked by his teammates ahead of the Slovakia game.

Despite the fall, Southgate has confirmed no lasting damage, and he is available for selection against Slovakia.

Gordon offered a tongue-in-cheek response when asked about thee accident and his injury during pre-game media duties.

We went on what was meant to be a recovery bike ride. It was a lovely day. I was going down a hill, trying to take a quick video for my family, just to show them what I was doing.

Before I knew it, I was head first into the floor. The bikes are electric so they are faster than normal bikes and, in England, the front brake is on the right-hand side. I have gone ten feet in the air, chin first.

Gordon insisted there will be no hangover on getting on a bike again and he promised a special goal celebration if he scores against Slovakia

I’ll put stabilisers next to the pitch maybe and you lot [the media] will get credit for the celebration. I will do it. You’ve got my word.

Southgate stuck with the bulk of his preferred starting team against Slovakia, with Kobbie Mainoo coming in for Conor Gallagher. With the Three Lions 1-0 down Gordon remained poised for a possible salvage job from the bench.

Australian Home Prices Continue 17-Month Surge Despite Downside Risks and High Interest Rates

Australian home prices rose in June for a seventeenth straight month, as tight supply outweighed demand-side pressures of high interest rates, a cost of living squeeze, and tight lending conditions, property consultant CoreLogic said on Monday.

Data from CoreLogic showed national home prices climbed 0.7% in June from May when it gained 0.8%. Prices are up 8.0% on a year earlier.

The persistent growth comes despite an array of downside risks, CoreLogic Research Director Tim Lawless said in a statement, pointing to the country’s cost of living squeeze, interest rates at a 12-year high, housing affordability issues, and strict credit policies from lenders.

The housing market resilience comes back to tight supply levels, which are keeping upwards pressure on values, he said.

Across state capital cities, monthly prices rose the fastest in Perth, up 2.0%, while in Adelaide they increased 1.7%, and in Brisbane they were up 1.2%. Prices in Melbourne fell 0.2%.

Demand-side factors were influential in the state price moves, especially with interstate migration rates tracking well above average in Western Australia, Queensland, and previously South Australia, CoreLogic said.

Australian consumer inflation accelerated to a six-month high in May, while a key measure of core prices rose for a fourth month, according to data out last week, prompting markets to hike chances of another interest rate hike this year.

The Reserve Bank of Australia has held interest rates steady at 4.35% for five straight meetings.

UNESCO Discovers Explosive Devices in Mosul’s Al-Nouri Mosque, Iraq

0

UNESCO has uncovered five explosive devices hidden within the walls of the historic al-Nouri Mosque in Mosul, Iraq, a remnant of the Islamic State militant group’s occupation of the area.

The mosque, renowned for its leaning minaret from the 12th century, was destroyed by IS in 2017 and has been a primary focus of UNESCO’s restoration efforts since 2020.

The U.N. agency reported that on Tuesday, five large-scale explosive devices, intended for significant destruction, were discovered inside the southern wall of the Prayer Hall. These explosive devices were concealed within a specially rebuilt section of the wall, the statement said. Iraqi authorities were promptly notified, secured the area, and the situation is now fully under control.

One bomb has been defused and removed, while the remaining four are interconnected and will be safely disposed of in the coming days. Iraqi authorities have requested that UNESCO suspend all reconstruction operations at al-Nouri mosque and evacuate the entire complex until the devices are disarmed.

The discovery of these bombs highlights the ongoing challenges in clearing Mosul of explosives and revitalizing its devastated urban areas.

International efforts, supported by the United Nations, focus on mine clearance and aiding in the city’s recovery. Despite progress, much of Mosul’s old city remains in ruins, marked by minefield warning signs, emphasizing the complexity of post-conflict reconstruction.

UNESCO aims to complete the full reconstruction of al-Nouri Mosque by December, finally erasing the stigma of the Daesh occupation, the statement said, using the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group’s name.

A decade after the Islamic State group declared its caliphate in large parts of Iraq and Syria, the extremists no longer control any land, have lost many prominent leaders, and are mostly out of the world news headlines.

However, the group continues to recruit members and claim responsibility for deadly attacks around the world, including lethal operations in Iran and Russia earlier this year that left scores dead. Its sleeper cells in Syria and Iraq still carry out attacks against government forces in both countries as well as U.S.-backed Syrian fighters, at a time when Iraq’s government is negotiating with Washington over a possible withdrawal of US troops.
