County Kerry Cricket Club has launched a fundraising campaign to build an extension to their facilities at their ground at The Spa.

The club was founded in 1872 and is the only cricket club in Kerry to have four senior men’s teams, a Taverners team, two junior teams and a women’s team. Many different nations are represented on one of the finest cricket grounds in Ireland.

We play cricket on Ireland’s finest grounds, at The Spa, where the spirit of cricket is alive and well. There is a great passion for the game at the Club, says Dave Ramsay, Chairman of the Club.

Unfortunately we do not have toilets or showers, which are now urgently needed. As you can understand, toilets are a basic requirement. We also need to do significant drainage work on our pitch, says Ramsay.

The Cricket Club has launched a project to raise 50,000 to build a modest extension that will house the facilities. To help with this, they have set up a GoFundMe page to help with fundraising.

We want to continue to make County Kerry Cricket Club a fantastic place to play cricket. For the wellbeing of our players and all our visitors, to enjoy the sport they love, to stay active, to be part of a team, community and local area, Ramsay added.

Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so via the GoFundMe page provided.

Perth Mum Launches Fundraiser for ADHD Sensory Playground, Australia

0

A Perth mum is calling on the community in a bid to raise funds for a new sensory playground for kids living with ADHD while shining a light on the heartbreaking reality of raising children with the disability in WA’s education sphere.

Down a secluded road in Perth’s western suburbs, seven-year-old Rex and his siblings are making the most out of the little patch of grass at ADHD WA’s new hub in Mt Claremont.

Watching on is Rex’s mum Peta Drury, who has recently launched a GoFundMe to raise funds to build a playground on that same patch of grass for children with ADHD to use during the days they spend at the hub.

It would really mean so much more than just a playground, Mrs Drury said.

They need a place to be noisy, to be inquisitive. They need to feel like this is a safe place, that they’re welcome here.

The idea and need for the fundraiser came after Mrs Drury discovered that ADHD WA, a not-for-profit group that provides support, advocacy, and people affected by ADHD, did not at the time receive funding from the Government.

I was absolutely shocked to find out the organisation doesn’t receive any Government funding, she said.

After I started to send Rex here, I realised that this place is swamped. It desperately needs all the help that they can get.

Since moving to new digs in Mt Claremont, ADHD WA has welcomed a $39 million State Government investment into child development, including new workshops to help children with ADHD find self-acceptance, develop self-compassion, and build resilience and coping skills.

For kids such as Rex, it means he can be supported in a meaningful way that Mrs Drury says is missing from his schooling experience.

In school, he didn’t have enough support, she said.

He was constantly being told by teachers and kids that he was naughty, bad or faulty.

It wasn’t until one school morning that Rex’s situation reached a painful breaking point when he said to his mum he no longer wanted to be alive.

At that point, I had had enough of school. I was like ‘I am not going to let you break my child, I’m taking you home’, she said.

She took 12 months off work to look after Rex, including hiring a teacher to home-school him for a term, as well as changing pediatricians to find a medication that best suited her son.

But despite Rex’s chapter having a positive turnaround, Mrs Drury said there remains serious gaps in the system, especially WA’s education sphere, that were failing kids such as Rex.

This issue in the health profession and in the education sphere is huge and it has been ignored for too long, she said.

I know how much my child suffered with having ADHD at school, and then you can multiply that thousands and thousands of times. My story is not unique.

Her cause is being supported by Kylie Seal-Pollard, who also has children diagnosed with ADHD and claims the State’s education system is not rightly funded to support children with the disorder.

Most of the time the school can’t help, or in some cases won’t help, because they’re not adequately funded to do it, Mrs Seal-Pollard said.

When your kid is suicidal at age five because they don’t want to go to school, that’s frightening.

It’s a really low place to reach as a parent when you don’t know how to help your child.

As the afternoon sun comes out behind the clouds, Rex sits patiently on a bench, occasionally poking at the graze on his knee that he got after taking a tumble on the concrete slabs that cover the grassy patch.

I’d love a playground, like one of those monkey bars that spin in circles, the little boy says through a toothless grin.

When I first came here I thought there would be a playground. But there’s not.

His smile begins to fade, replaced by a look of confusion.

I don’t like school, he says, looking back at the spot where he tripped on the concrete.

But at least school has a playground.

Teen From Colorado Dies from Suspected Electrocution at Smith Mountain Lake, US

NEET-UG 2024 Counselling Postponed Amid Controversy: Centre Responds to Supreme Court Hearing on Exam Irregularities, India

0

NEW DELHI: The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 counselling has been deferred until further notice, including the all-India quota (AIQ) seat counselling that was set to commence today. No new date has been announced as of now.

In anticipation of the Supreme Court’s important hearing on the NEET-UG controversy, the Centre and National Testing Agency (NTA) acknowledged the allegations of irregularities and paper leak during the examination. However, they have informed the court that cancelling the test is unnecessary, as only a miniscule number of students were involved, and the interests of the 23 lakh students who took the examination honestly should not be compromised.

The Centre and NTA, in separate affidavits submitted to the apex court, agreed that the impact of irregularities, cheating, impersonation, malpractices, and paper leak was limited and restricted to a few centres in Patna and Godhra, and that the students involved did not gain the advantage they were seeking.

The NEET for undergraduate admissions in 2024, held on May 5, encountered controversies surrounding alleged irregularities in the scoring process. In response to apprehensions about inflated scores resulting from the awarding of ‘grace marks,’ the authorities decided to conduct a retest on June 23 for the 1,563 candidates who were impacted by this issue.

Among the affected candidates, 813 chose to participate in the retest, seeking to obtain scores that accurately reflected their performance. However, a significant portion, constituting 48% of the affected candidates, opted to retain their original scores without the inclusion of the controversial grace marks.

Google’s JEST AI Training Revolutionizes Efficiency in Industry, US

Researchers at Google’s DeepMind have unveiled a new way to accelerate AI training, drastically reducing the computational resources and time required for the task. According to a recent research paper, this new approach to a normally energy-intensive process could make AI development faster and cheaper, which could also be good news for the environment.

Our approach, Multimodal Contrastive Learning with Joint Example Selection (JEST), outperforms state-of-the-art models with up to 13x fewer iterations and 10x fewer computational efforts, the study states.

The AI industry is known for its high energy consumption. Large-scale AI systems like ChatGPT require significant processing power, which in turn requires large amounts of energy and water to cool these systems. For example, Microsoft’s water consumption is reported to have skyrocketed by 34% from 2021 to 2022 due to increased demand for AI computing, and ChatGPT has been accused of consuming approximately half a liter of water for every 5-50 prompts.

Comparing the power demands of AI to the energy profile of the oft-maligned cryptocurrency mining industry, the International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that data center electricity consumption will double between 2022 and 2026.

But approaches like JEST could offer a solution: By optimizing data selection for AI training, Google says JEST can significantly reduce the number of iterations and required computing power, lowering overall energy consumption — an approach that aligns with efforts to improve the efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of AI technology.

If this technology proves effective at scale, AI trainers will require only a fraction of the power used to train models, meaning you could create more powerful AI tools with the same resources you use today, or develop new models with fewer resources.

How JEST works

JEST works by selecting complementary batches of data to maximize the learnability of an AI model. Unlike traditional methods that select individual examples, the algorithm considers the composition of the entire set.

For example, say you’re learning multiple languages. Instead of learning English, German, and Norwegian separately, in order of difficulty, it might be more effective to learn the three languages together, in such a way that knowledge of one language supports the learning of the other.

Google has adopted a similar approach with success.

We demonstrate that jointly selecting batches of data is more effective for learning than individually selecting examples, the researchers wrote in their paper.

To do so, Google researchers used multimodal contrastive learning, where the JEST process identifies dependencies between data points. This method improves the speed and efficiency of AI training and significantly reduces the computational power required.

According to Google, the key to this approach is starting with a pre-trained reference model to guide the data selection process. This technique allows the model to focus on high-quality, curated datasets, further optimizing training efficiency.

The quality of a batch depends not only on the total quality of the data points considered individually, but also on its composition, the paper explains.

Research experiments have shown robust performance improvements across a range of benchmarks, including significant improvements in learning speed and resource efficiency when training on the popular WebLI dataset with JEST.

The researchers also found that the algorithm was able to quickly find sub-batches that were more likely to learn, accelerating the training process by focusing on specific data that matched each other. This technique, called data quality bootstrapping, prioritizes quality over quantity and has proven to be well-suited for AI training.

Reference models trained on small, curated datasets can effectively guide the curation of much larger datasets, making it possible to train models that significantly exceed the quality of the reference model on many downstream tasks, the paper states.
