Morocco Targets European Market Share in Legal Cannabis Industry

Morocco’s agency for regulating legal cannabis activities issued 2,905 authorizations for legal cannabis production as of April.

Morocco is aspiring to continue growing its legalized cannabis industry, targeting both local and European markets.

French news outlet Le Monde highlighted in a report this week Morocco’s potential to achieve a European market share of 10% to 15%.

Citing remarks by the Moroccan Federation of the Pharmaceutical Industr, Le Monde recalled that Morocco hopes to reach annual revenues of MAD 4.2 to 6.3 billion within four years.

Under this goal, Morocco seeks to rely on the boost from the wave of legalization in the European Union (EU), where medical cannabis is authorized in 21 of the 27 member countries, said Le Monde on Tuesday.

The report highlighted the race of labs involved in the industry, including Sothema, which made a turnover of €230 million last year.

The laboratory has developed 15 cannabis-based medicines to treat different health conditions, including cancer, epilepsy, as well as multiple sclerosis.

The laboratory also set sights locally and in European markets, mainly Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, and Denmark.

Focusing on France, Le Monde noted that French companies are not only an export target but are also participating in interest groups in Morocco, including the Bio Cannat cooperative.

In April, Morocco’s National Agency for Regulating Activities Related to Cannabis (ANRAC) issued 2,905 authorizations for legal cannabis production.

Around 2,737 permits were granted to 2,637 farmers in the regions of Taounate, Chefchaouen, and Al Hoceima for the cultivation and production of legal cannabis, a significant increase from the 430 authorizations granted last year.

Morocco adopted Law 13-21 on the legal use of cannabis in 2021, positioning itself among a growing list of African countries approving the use of cannabis for therapeutic purposes.

In May, Mohamed El Bouhmadi, president of the Moroccan Federation of Pharmaceuticals, stressed Morocco’s potential to become a key player in the European medical cannabis market.

Medical cannabis is emerging as a new hope in the health field, El Bouhmadi said.

Mass Stranding of Pilot Whales in Orkney: 77 Whales, Only 12 Survivors, UK

British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) received a report of a mass stranding of up to 100 long-finned pilot whales on Sanday, Orkney, just before 11 am on Thursday. Of the 77 whales which were on the beach, only 12 survived with medics mobilised from around the islands and further afield in Scotland in a bid to save them. A similar incident occurred on July 16, 2023, on the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, when 55 pilot whales were stranded, with only one surviving.

Pilot whales are incredibly sociable and so it’s possible that one of them stranded and the rest followed, according to Molly Brown of BDMLR. The cause of the stranding remains unknown, but efforts are underway to save the remaining live whales as the tide approaches. The Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme intends to conduct post-mortem investigations to determine the cause of the tragic event.

Former Police Officer Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison for Fatal Shooting of Aurora Teen, US

A former Greenwood Village police officer was sentenced Thursday to two years in prison for the killing of an Aurora teen in late 2021.

Adam Holen, 38, will also have to serve three years in probation as part of the sentencing handed down by Arapahoe County Judge Eric White. Holen was found guilty of manslaughter for the murder of 17-year-old Peyton Blitstein after a confrontation that resulted in an exchange of gunfire between the two.

During the trial, forensic evidence showed that Holen was shot once, while Blitstein was shot nine times. Doorbell camera footage captured the encounter, but it did not definitively establish who fired their weapon first.

Holen, who had resigned from the Greenwood Village Police Department prior to the incident, was found to be intoxicated at the time of the shooting, with a blood alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit. Upon arrival at the scene, police found Blitstein on the ground as a woman attempted CPR, with Holen nearby with a gunshot wound to his hip.

In a statement to police, Holen claimed to have confronted Blitstein and his friends for allegedly speeding through the neighborhood. He alleged that three individuals surrounded him, with Blitstein pulling a firearm and shooting him first, leading Holen to return fire with his own weapon.

Blitstein was pronounced deceased at a hospital later that evening. The case shed light on the fatal consequences of the confrontation between the former officer and the teenager.

The Gartner survey of 5,728 customers reveals that while customer service leaders are eager to adopt AI, customers remain concerned about its use, with just over half (53%) insisting they would consider switching to a competitor if they had a bad experience.

The top concern that consumers have about AI in customer service is that it will get more and more difficult to reach a person, followed by AI displacing jobs, and AI providing the wrong answers.

Gartner customer service and support practice senior principal of research Keith McIntosh said: Three-fifths of customer service and support leaders are under pressure to adopt AI in their function. But they can’t ignore concerns about AI use, especially when it could mean losing customers.

Once customers exhaust self-service options, they’re ready to reach out to a person. Many customers fear that GenAI will simply become another obstacle between them and an agent. The onus is on service and support leaders to show customers that AI can streamline the service experience.

The report maintains that organisations must build customers’ trust in AI by ensuring their GenAI capabilities follow the best practices. Customers must know the AI-infused journey will deliver better solutions and seamless guidance, including connecting them to a person when necessary.

McIntosh concluded: AI-infused chatbots must communicate to the customer that they will connect them to an agent in the event that the AI cannot provide a solution.

It must then seamlessly transform into an agent chat that picks up where the chatbot left off. This way, the customer can trust that they will be able to efficiently find their solution while using the AI-infused channel.

The winners of the Develop:Star Awards 2024, hosted last night during Develop:Brighton, have been announced.

The Develop:Star Awards, sponsored by Unreal Engine, saw winners crowned in 22 categories before this year’s Develop Star Award recipient, Sports Interactive, was celebrated for its contribution to the UK game development scene.

It was a big night for Larian Studios following the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 last summer, as they claimed Best Narrative, Best Studio – sponsored by Epic Games – and Best Game – sponsored by Testronic.

The brand-new Best Creative Lead category was won by Sam Lake of Remedy Entertainment, with the developer also taking home Best Visual Art and Best Audio for Alan Wake 2. The other new award this year, Supporting Star, was won by Game Republic.

Elsewhere, A Highland Song developer inkle won Best Small Studio, Best Mobile Game went to SEGA HARDlight’s Sonic Dream Team, and Best Game Design was won by Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2.
