LONDON — E-commerce giant Amazon’s multibillion-dollar investment in the U.S. artificial intelligence firm Anthropic is formally being investigated by a U.K. competition regulator.

The Competition and Markets Authority said Thursday that it has begun a Phase 1 investigation into Amazon’s investment and partnership with Anthropic to assess whether the deal has resulted in a relevant merger situation that may harm competition in the U.K.

Following initial scrutiny into the Amazon-Anthropic partnership, the CMA now has sufficient information in relation to the tie-up to begin a formal probe, the regulator said in a notice on its website.

The CMA now has up to 40 working days to decide whether the transaction could harm competition and should therefore be scrutinized further in an in-depth Phase 2 investigation.

The article mentioned human and property damage occurring but noted no abnormalities at nuclear facilities.

Anti-Racism Protests Thwart Far-Right Rallies Across UK

0

Thousands of anti-racism protesters have taken to the streets across the United Kingdom to counter a spate of far-right rallies planned to target immigration centers, seeming to thwart what looked set to be another day of rioting.

After days of violence spurred by disinformation around a deadly stabbing attack, police had braced for another night of unrest on Wednesday. Far-right groups on social media had called for protests to target visa processing centers and immigration lawyers’ offices at more than 100 sites around the country at 8 p.m. local time.

But by the early evening, thousands of counter-protesters had gathered at more than a dozen cities to guard the immigration centers and prevent them being targeted by the far right.

There are many, many more of us than you, crowds chanted at the anti-racism demonstrations across the country, bolstered by a markedly stronger police presence than over the weekend, and with virtually no sign of any far-right supporters.

Whether Wednesday’s counter-protests represent a turning point is not yet clear, but fears of another night of unrest have abated for now. The fizzling out of the planned protests will come as a major relief for the new Labour government, and for communities that had prepared for the worst.

It may also be a sign that many have been deterred from taking to the streets, after previous far-right protests turned violent and hundreds of rioters were arrested over the weekend, with some already receiving prison sentences.

Businesses in Walthamstow had boarded up earlier Wednesday, in preparation for planned far-right protests.

In Walthamstow, east London, the immigration center was entirely boarded up, protected by a heavy police presence and surrounded by around three or four thousand counter-protesters.

We today have got such brilliant numbers in our community, an organizer shouted through a megaphone to a hastily organized crowd. We have shown them whose streets these really are. These are our streets.

Ahmed Hussain, 31, said he had come out to support the counter-protesters because when you don’t, the fascists feel emboldened.

In London you would never see them rioting on the scale that they have outside London, Hussain told CNN. They’re nowhere to be seen… it shows that when everyone comes out to support, their numbers dwindle.

The worst of the past week’s violence was concentrated in the north of England. In Rotherham on Sunday, far-right rioters set fire to a hotel used to house asylum seekers as more than 200 people cowered inside. Large crowds of people shouting enough is enough and get ’em out were also seen clashing with police in several other cities.

In Sheffield, a city a few miles south of Rotherham, residents told CNN they had felt terrified by the outbreak of violence, which they said they felt had emboldened racist behavior.

I normally walk through this city center all the time, said Nadeem Akhtar, 18, who has lived in Sheffield his whole life. But now, recently, even my mum’s been saying to me, don’t be going out so much, because you never know what could happen.

The British Science Association (BSA), the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) are pleased to announce that the British Science Festival for 2025 will take place in Liverpool across five days next September.

The Festival will be held between Wednesday 10 and Monday 15 September 2025, with events due to take place in venues across the city. The programme will feature roughly 100 free events, exhibitions, performances and installations that celebrate the people, stories and ideas at the heart of science.

Celebrating the 194th anniversary of the Festival, and working in partnership with the two co-hosting universities, the BSA will bring its flagship event to the city of Liverpool for the first time since 2008.

Hannah Russell, Chief Executive of the British Science Association, says: We’re delighted to be bringing the British Science Festival to the city of Liverpool in 2025. The vibrant and diverse culture of Liverpool make it the ideal setting for our Festival, and I know that as a result the programme will be spectacular. It is a real honour for the BSA to be working alongside not just one, but two, world-leading research institutions in 2025, and I feel confident that we will achieve our shared goals of showcasing the transformative research and innovation taking place at Liverpool John Moores University and University of Liverpool.

Established in 1881, the University of Liverpool is a globally-recognised institution that delivers world-class research and education, delivering a positive impact on both people and planet. Associated with nine Nobel Laureates, the University has an illustrious association with science and innovation. In 1896, an X-ray of a bullet in a boy’s hand was taken by the University’s Professor of Physics, Oliver Lodge – the first time X-ray photography was used for surgical purposes in the UK. Today, the University are spearheading innovative approaches to materials discovery for net zero solutions, transforming medicine and healthcare through therapeutics, and uncovering the deepest secrets of the Universe with unique technology and expertise in particle physics.

Professor Anthony Hollander, Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Impact at the University of Liverpool, says: Liverpool is a vibrant centre of research, education, science, and storytelling which will provide a fantastic setting for the festival. Engaging all our people and communities in the transformative power of scientific research and innovation is vitally important to address many key issues in the Liverpool city region, and stays true to our mission to advance learning and ennoble life.

As a world-leading Russell Group University embedded in our wonderful city, we have a cutting-edge research and science portfolio with both local and global impact. We look forward to collaborating with Liverpool John Moores University and wider regional partners to deliver a brilliant Festival programme for everyone to enjoy.

Liverpool John Moores University is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool city region but with a global presence. The world is changing at incredible speed and the University’s research and knowledge exchange aims to explore new boundaries and impact the world around us by being at the forefront of educational and scientific innovation.

Over the past 200 years, LJMU has pioneered the first formal classes in navigation studies, when astronomy was used to guide ships across the seas and was the first UK university to launch the BSc Climate Change degree. Today, their scientists are operating the largest robotic telescope in the world, inspiring the next generation of space explorers, using AI to aid wildlife conservation, conducting forensic research and facial depiction to assist the criminal justice system, and utilising their sports science expertise to support Olympic research and inclusion.

The Festival will showcase the impactful and transformational work the universities and others undertake to promote innovation, social responsibility and a change for good.

A festival of celebration that brings people and science together for mutual benefit and learning is going to be a flagship event for Liverpool and the city region.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said: I am delighted that the British Science Festival will be coming to the Liverpool City Region. As Mayor, building on the region’s history of innovation, I’m working to make our area an R&D powerhouse, forging ahead with new developments in health and life sciences, artificial intelligence and a wide range of other areas.

But, as we attract new investment, start new businesses and create new jobs, I want to ensure that local people can take full advantage. Inclusive events like this are perfect opportunities to capture the imagination of the next generation and get them interested in the sciences. I hope that in years to come, there’s a Nobel Prize winner looking back at Liverpool’s time hosting the British Science Festival as the catalyst that set them on that path!

The British Science Festival is one of Europe’s longest-established science festivals, which travels to a different part of the UK each year. It brings science to the wider public in the form of installations, exhibitions, talks, panel discussions, performances and more.

Adrian Newey Set to Join Aston Martin in $400M Deal, Verstappen’s Future Uncertain, UK

There has been plenty of speculation about what legendary engineer Adrian Newey’s Formula 1 future holds, even before it was confirmed in May that he will be leaving Red Bull once the 2024 season concludes, bringing an end to a run that began nearly two decades ago.

Several teams have been linked to the 65-year-old Briton, who, for what it’s worth, has not yet been willing to commit to remaining in Formula 1 at all.

However, those links have been loosely based on nothing more than rumors, most notably that which had him joining Ferrari and beginning work on the 2025 car as soon as he was allowed to.

Now it has emerged that Newey has reportedly signed a deal with Aston Martin, and that deal, a four-year deal worth roughly $400 million, is expected to be announced in September.

Of course, until anything is confirmed, take it with a grain of salt, but this particular development has significantly more backing than his links to other teams, including Ferrari, Williams, and Mercedes.

Aston Martin have been one of the teams pursuing Newey’s services from the start, and team owner Lawrence Stroll has shown to be as ambitious as they come when it comes to building up the Formula 1 team he purchased in 2018 and used to bring Aston Martin back into the sport after more than six decades away in 2021.

Should the Silverstone outfit indeed secure Newey’s services for 2025 and beyond, their focus would turn to another top individual currently employed by Red Bull.

Three-time reigning world champion and current championship leader Max Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull that extends through the 2028 season, but amid some of the preseason unrest involving allegations of misconduct against team principal Christian Horner, it was revealed that his contract may contain clauses which allow him to leave early.

One of those clauses is believed to pertain to key personnel leaving the team, and Newey was said to be included among those key personnel. So when his departure was confirmed, speculation about Verstappen’s future ramped up, especially as it has become more and more obvious that his father, Jos, and Horner are not on the same page.

Verstappen has also been linked to Mercedes, with Toto Wolff having made it no secret that he would like the 26-year-old Dutchman to be the driver to replace the Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton alongside George Russell. But Mercedes appear to have a solid contingency plan in place, with junior driver Kimi Antonelli poised for a promotion sooner rather than later.

All signs point to Verstappen staying at Red Bull for another year in 2025, but there are further questions about his status for 2026, when a new era of Formula 1 is set to begin amid a sweeping new set of regulations.

Fernando Alonso recently signed a contract extension to remain with Aston Martin through the end of the 2026 season. But there is growing speculation that, given his age and some of his frustration with the team’s step back in performance as of late, he could decide to retire early, rather than stick with the team through the introduction of the new regulations. He is set to be 45 years old by the time the 2026 season ends.

Alonso, a two-time world champion, replaced four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, Stroll’s first major signing upon Aston Martin’s return to Formula 1, after the 2022 season. Could the team replace Alonso with another multi-time world champion less than two years from now?

The team’s other driver is Lawrence’s son Lance, and he too recently signed a multi-year contract extension to remain with the team through at least the 2026 season. There has also been speculation that he may decide to move into more of a management role within the team, but he basically has a contract with the team until he wants to stop.

This isn’t to say that Alonso is for sure the driver Verstappen would replace. But given the speculation that he is being targeted for 2026, and both Aston Martin drivers are under contract through 2026, everything is clearly on the table.

It may also be worth mentioning that Aston Martin and Red Bull had an innovation partnership from 2016 to 2020, with Aston Martin even serving as the title sponsor of the Red Bull Formula 1 team from 2018 to 2020. Additionally, the partnership between the brands allowed Newey to collaborate with Aston Martin on a road car project.

Harry and Meghan’s upcoming trip to Colombia later this year is expected to proceed without raising concerns among the King and Prince of Wales. Initial worries surfaced when it seemed like the couple might opt for a high-profile visit to the Paris Olympics, a popular destination for global dignitaries and royal figures. However, it appears that Harry and Meghan’s chosen itinerary won’t interfere with the plans of the King and Prince of Wales, relieving any potential tensions. The decision to skip the Olympics was noticeable, leading to low-key appearances in the royal circle, with Princess Anne and Duchess Sophie carrying out duties in a subdued manner. Amidst the royal silence surrounding the Olympics, other events and personal milestones have garnered attention, such as Manchester’s Aimee Lou Wood taking on an American role in ‘The White Lotus’ and the revealing documentary about Elizabeth Taylor’s first kiss with actor Robert Taylor. Additionally, speculations arise on whether Hugh Bonneville’s reported relationship with ‘vegan influencer’ Heidi Kadlecova will impact his well-known struggles with weight.
