Taylor Swift and Scotland’s Euros Boost Economy by £200m – A Summer of Gold Rush Begins in Scotland, UK

0

A breakdown of the incredible boost for the nation has been revealed

Taylor Swift and Scotland’s Euros heroes are set to spark a ‘gold rush’ – with a whopping £200m boost to the economy.

But the same number of music fans will be descending on Murrayfield this weekend for three successive sell-out concerts by American superstar Swift.

Recent data from Barclays revealed in their ‘Swiftonomics’ report showed that Taylor-lovers heading to the Edinburgh stadium are set to spend 12 times the average of UK night out.

Meaning they will be splashing a total of £848 on tickets, travel, accommodation, outfits, and other expenses.

Across the three nights of gigs, around 220,000 fans are set to pack out Murrayfield, bringing the economic boost to Scotland from Swifties alone to more than £185 million.

They’ll splash out on hotels, restaurants, pubs, and taxis that will make up for any economic drain caused by the German departures.

Meanwhile, pubs and bars are still set to do millions in roaring trade throughout the Euros, with non-traveling Tartan Army supporters packing out boozers for the big games.

Rich Robinson, Head of Hospitality & Leisure at Barclays, said: Scotland’s summer of sport and entertainment is great news for pubs and bars across the country.

In particular, venues near Murrayfield Stadium will be packed later this week, thanks to three performances of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour attracting over 200,000 Swifties, of whom roughly four in five say they’ll spend money on drinks either before or after the concert.

Later this month, venues across the country will receive another uplift during Scotland’s group stage matches at the Euros.

Pub landlords will certainly be hoping that the squad can make it through to the last 16 and beyond, as each additional win will bring a boost to their bottom line.

Businesses across the hospitality and leisure sector will be looking to capitalize on these types of sporting and cultural events because consumers consistently show that they’re willing to spend more on unique and memorable experiences.

Boozers and shopkeepers are counting on the big hitters to avoid another tills bashing this summer.

And it comes off the back of retail sales dropping 0.5 percent in May compared to last year, which was boosted by the King’s coronation.

Ewan MacDonald Russell, Deputy Head of the Scottish Retail Consortium, said: Looking ahead, retailers will hope the upcoming run of major events, including the Olympics, European Men’s Football Championships, and a series of high-profile concerts, will kick off a brighter period of trading.

Retailers know all too well how cruel summer can be so will hope they can shake it off and be ready for it to be a potential gold rush to get out of the woods in the coming months.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Beer & Pub Association said: Many in Edinburgh and across Scotland are optimistic about the next few months though.

The Euros, followed by the Olympics and a hopefully good tourist season should hopefully lead to a bumper summer.

And a VisitScotland spokesperson added: Taylor Swift’s forthcoming shows in Edinburgh have created a real buzz in the capital but could have an impact far beyond the city boundaries.

Couple that with Euro 2024 starting next week, including organized fan zones across the country, and it could be a fantastic start to the summer season for tourism in Scotland.

Scotland meanwhile begins their Euros campaign in Munich next Friday, June 14, when they take on hosts Germany in the Allianz Arena.

Further matches against Switzerland in Cologne on June 19 and against Hungary in Stuttgart on June 23 could spark further spending by consumers here.

Former U.S. Soldier Extradited from Ukraine on Charges of Killings and Robbery in Florida, Alleged Plot Against Venezuela, US

0

A former U.S. soldier has been extradited from Ukraine after being charged in connection with an alleged international crime spree that included the 2018 killings and robbery of a couple in Florida. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 34-year-old Craig Austin Lang is facing federal indictments in Florida, North Carolina, and Arizona stemming back to 2019. Lang, a U.S. citizen, denied the charges in his Florida court appearance.

Lang is accused of using a firearm during a deadly violent crime in Florida, violating the Neutrality Act, and conspiring to commit violence in Venezuela. The extradition was possible after Lang’s claim challenging the process was rejected by the European Court of Human Rights. Lang pleaded not guilty in the Florida case while facing charges in other states.

Lang’s alleged conduct is shocking in its scope and its callous disregard for human life, stated Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri. The case involves multiple charges across different states, reflecting a complex narrative of criminal activities.

The killings in Florida occurred in 2018 when Lang and another former U.S. Army soldier, Alex Jared Zwiefelhofer, allegedly murdered a couple during a planned weapons purchase. The two individuals had previously claimed to be part of a volunteer battalion in Ukraine and were deported back to the U.S. following detainment in Kenya.

The Justice Department’s investigation indicates that Lang had been involved in various criminal activities across borders, including attempting to acquire passports illegally and violating passport restrictions. Lang’s extradition from Ukraine opens a new chapter in the ongoing legal proceedings.

Zwiefelhofer, who was also convicted in connection with the Florida case, awaits sentencing. The complex web of events surrounding the allegedly orchestrated crime spree continues to unfold as Lang’s case progresses through the U.S. legal system.

MLB Infielder Tucupita Marcano Under Investigation for Baseball Betting Scandal, Venezuela

0

Current San Diego Padre and former Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Tucupita Marcano is under investigation for breaking the MLB’s gambling policy. He’s alleged to do the one thing that’s not allowed!

If found to have violated the league’s rule, he could receive a lifetime ban. More from Jared Diamond and Lindsey Adler of the Wall Street Journal:

Major League Baseball is investigating San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano for violating the sport’s gambling policy, and he faces the possibility of a lifetime ban, people familiar with the matter said…

Marcano’s ultimate punishment hasn’t been finalized, pending ongoing negotiations between MLB and the MLB Players Association. In addition to Marcano, four other players face potential discipline for betting on baseball while in the minor leagues, people familiar with the matter said.

Marcano is one of five players being investigated, though he’s the only one on a Major League roster. Those four minor league players have yet to be named.

The timeline is said to have occurred last season when he was a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The infielder tore his ACL while running the basepaths midway through the year, and these bets were said to have been placed while he was on the injured list.

He bet on baseball games!

The MLB allows players to bet on all sports other than baseball, legally. The one no-no is gambling on the diamond, though that stretches across all levels of play (NCAA, MiLB, MLB, etc.). Everything else is fair game!

The language of Rule 21, which outlines MLB’s gambling policy, is posted prominently in every clubhouse. Players are allowed to bet legally on sports other than baseball. A player betting on a baseball game involving teams other than his own results in a one-year suspension. Betting on a game involving your own team comes with a lifetime ban.

Given that he was living in legalized gambling state Pennsylvania at the time of these alleged placements, Marcano would’ve been within the league policy had he wagered on say, an NFL game or NBA action.

He’s said to have broken the cardinal rule, and it could cost him!

Making matters worse, he’s believed to have bet on his own team, moving that potential one-year suspension to a lifetime ban. It’s now the second major gambling scandal to sweep through the MLB this season, following the actions of Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter.

It will be interesting to see how the league handles the situation.

Paramount to Merge with Skydance in Multi-Billion-Dollar Deal, US

0

Over the last few months, news has been flying that Paramount is getting closer to a deal to be sold to or merge with Skydance. Now after Skydance Media reportedly made the deal even stronger, a special committee of Paramount Global’s board members has approved a merger with Skydance but the majority owner has not signed off on the deal. CNBC reports that the deal could be officially announced in the coming days.

Details are still thin, but at last report with this deal, the Redstone family will get $2 billion, and Class B shareholders will get $3 billion to complete the deal, according to CNBC.

Last April CNBC reported a deal is close that would see Paramount merge with Skydance, but Spectrum Cable TV could be an issue. Now Spectrum and Paramount have reached a deal to keep Paramount networks on Spectrum Cable TV and add some of its streaming services.

In April, Variety reported that Paramount Global’s majority owner, Shari Redstone, turned down a cash offer from Apollo Global Management for $27 billion.

Exact details of the offer have not been disclosed, but it is reported that the Redstone family prefers this Skydance deal over other offers.

Paramount Global is controlled by media executive Shari Redstone who also controls National Amusements, which owns 77% of Paramount’s voting shares. Reportedly, the Redstone family is also looking to sell their 77% ownership of Paramount. With that ownership, the Redstone family needs to be on board with any deal, and it has been reported that they are more interested in a deal like this than other deals, like the offer from Appollo Global Management to buy just the studios.

Any sale or merger would include the entire Paramount company from its cable TV networks, like Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and MTV, to multiple movie theaters.

Talks between Paramount and Skydance have reportedly been happening since November 2023.

The entertainment industry faces difficult times with cable TV viewership declining and most streamers struggling to achieve profitability. Paramount’s streaming service, Paramount+, is among the companies fighting to stay afloat.

Paramount’s $8 Billion Takeover Deal with Skydancer Media Approved by Board, US

0

Paramount (PARA) shares surged as much as 9% on Monday after CNBC said the legacy media giant has reached an $8 billion takeover agreement with David Ellison’s Skydance Media.

The deal must first be approved by Shari Redstone, who controls Paramount through her family’s holding company National Amusements. Last week, an independent special committee of Paramount’s board recommended the deal.

We received the financial terms of the proposed Paramount/Skydance transaction over the weekend and we are reviewing them, National Amusements said in a statement to Yahoo Finance.

The update comes after months of back and forth talks between Paramount and interested parties that’s included not only Skydance but also Sony Pictures Entertainment and private equity firm Apollo Global Management, along with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), media mogul Byron Allen, and Hollywood producer Steven Paul. (Disclosure: Yahoo Finance is owned by Apollo.)

As part of the two-step deal, Shari Redstone will sell her National Amusements’ controlling stake in Paramount to Skydance Media for around $2 billion, according to CNBC. National Amusements owns approximately 10% of Paramount’s equity capital value and maintains 77% of voting shares.

Skydance, which is backed by private equity firms RedBird Capital and KKR, will then merge its studio business with Paramount’s at a reported price that values the legacy media giant at just under $5 billion. Skydance and its affiliates will also offer a cash injection of $1.5 billion to help pare down Paramount’s debt.

Skydance will reportedly purchase about half of Paramount’s nonvoting shares for $4.5 billion, or about $15 a share. As first reported by the Wall Street Journal, nonvoting shareholders will have the option to cash out about half of their stock at the $15 premium with the remaining shares converted into shares of the newly merged company.

A separate report from Bloomberg said investors in Paramount’s voting stock, outside of the Redstone family, will be offered a price of $23 a share.

At the close of the merger, which is valued at $8 billion, Skydance and RedBird will own two-thirds of the company with the remaining third owned by the nonvoting shareholders.

Skydance revised its offer multiple times after nonvoting shareholders expressed concerns over the terms of its first deal, which was valued at $5 billion. Nonvoting shareholders said that unfairly benefited Redstone at the expense of other investors.

Amid the turmoil, Paramount announced the departure of its CEO Bob Bakish in late April after he was reportedly at odds with Redstone over the Skydance deal. He’s since been replaced by an Office of the CEO consortium made up of three company division heads.

Paramount’s annual shareholder meeting will take place on Tuesday morning.

Los Angeles Fire Dept. Sued for Retaliation Against Christian Employee Refusing Pride Flag, US

A Christian employee has filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles County Fire Department, alleging religious discrimination and retaliation. Capt. Jeffrey Little claims he faced disciplinary action for refusing to raise a Pride flag and seeking a religious exemption. The dispute led to his suspension, an internal investigation, and breaches of privacy. Little’s lawyers argue the department violated his constitutional rights, compelling speech, and religious freedom. The lawsuit seeks remedies such as back pay, reinstatement, and religious accommodation for Little, asserting that his beliefs were disregarded. The Fire Department has declined to comment on the ongoing litigation.
