0

Around 16,000 individuals were injured during the traditional sheep slaughter in Turkiye on the first day of Eid al-Adha. Health Minister Fahrettin Koca revealed that many of the injuries were caused by amateur attempts at sacrificing the animals, emphasizing the risks involved in inexperienced handling. The incident led to over 1,300 cases in Ankara, 840 in Istanbul, and 416 in Izmir alone. Tragically, one person in Istanbul suffered a fatal heart attack at a slaughterhouse. Despite regulations requiring slaughtering to take place in designated areas, many locals tend to overlook these rules, resulting in a significant number of injuries during the holiday. Eid al-Adha, known as Qurban Bayram in Turkiye, holds religious significance as it commemorates Ibrahim’s obedience to God by being willing to sacrifice his son. The holiday took place on June 16 in Turkiye.

Janelle Cuthbertson Named Port Adelaide’s New AFLW Captain, Ready for Leadership Challenge, Australia

0

Late bloomer Janelle Cuthbertson has been named as Port Adelaide’s new AFLW captain, taking over from retired great Erin Phillips.

Cuthbertson was a joint vice-captain last year after crossing to the Power following 24 games with Fremantle.

The 33-year-old made an immediate impact with her Power teammates and was voted by them to be their captain.

Phillips, arguably the AFLW’s most decorated player, was named Port’s inaugural women’s captain and skippered the side for two years before her retirement.

Cuthbertson has big shoes to fill, and the 2021 All-Australian is ready for the challenge.

Port Adelaide is such an esteemed club with such a rich history and it’s an honour to be able to wear the number one, Cuthbertson said in a statement.

To be voted in by your peers and your teammates, being trusted to run out there and lead the team and captain this club is something I’m not going to take for granted, and I know my family is very proud.

Coming over here just over 12 months ago, my goal was to earn my stripes and earn the respect of my teammates and show them that I was here for them, and this club has very quickly become home for me.

It’s my family – I’ve been welcomed with open arms.

Justine Mules-Robinson has been voted Cuthbertson’s vice-captain, with Ange Foley and Ash Saint rounding out the leadership group.

Mules-Robinson and Foley were both part of the leadership group in the club’s first two AFLW campaigns, while Saint has been included for the first time.

Cuthbertson was a junior tennis star, but quit the sport at the age of 21 while at college in the US after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

A year and a half later, that diagnosis was downgraded to transverse myelitis – an inflammation of the spinal cord.

Cuthbertson, who at the age of 17 lost some feeling in her left leg due to the condition, only started playing women’s football in 2019, and just five games later was selected by Fremantle ahead of the 2020 season.

In just her second season she was awarded an All-Australian jersey following a standout campaign in defence.

Cuthbertson has continued to flourish, and will be aiming to help Port bounce back from last year’s 15th-placed finish, in which they posted two wins and a draw from 10 games.

The Power only managed one win and a draw in their inaugural season.

Port Adelaide will begin their 2024 AFLW campaign with a Showdown encounter against Adelaide at Alberton Oval on August 31.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have reached an agreement to navigate their nations’ differences, signaling a positive shift from a tumultuous period. During their meeting at Parliament House, discussions revolved around trade barriers, military conflicts, and China’s interest in investing in critical minerals.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of managing disagreements while fostering a comprehensive strategic partnership. Li expressed optimism about the bilateral relationship’s progress, highlighting the need for constructive dialogue. Albanese echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the significance of cooperation and respectful engagement between nations with diverse backgrounds.

The recent thaw in relations follows the easing of trade barriers set by Beijing in 2020, signaling a more open stance towards Australia. Li’s visit, the first by a Chinese premier in seven years, signifies a pivotal moment in diplomatic relations between the two countries.

As discussions evolve, both sides are keen on addressing outstanding issues, including Chinese bans on Australian exports like rock lobsters and beef products. Delhi’s Water Woes to End with Renuka Dam: Relief Expected by 2032, India

0

Delhi News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Last week, Delhi was grappling with Haryana and Himachal Pradesh for water in the Supreme Court. Big numbers – 137 cusecs, 150 cusecs – got tossed around. A cusec is 28.3 litres of water per second. There are 86,400 seconds in a day. Do the math and you are looking at 33.5 crore to 36.7 crore litres a day.

It’s a lot of water, but nothing compared with what Delhi could have got every summer, without begging, pleading, fighting, and litigating, had a long-promised dam been built on a small, unsung river 250km away.
