Lakewood Public Library Embraces Banned Books Week, Championing Freedom of Expression

Banning books poses a threat to a nation founded on the principles of freedom and expression. In support of this fundamental right, the Lakewood Public Library in Ohio actively participates in Banned Books Week every year. This global event, which runs through October 7th, is observed by schools and libraries worldwide.

Andrea Fisher, the Madison Branch Manager of Lakewood Public Library, highlights the library’s long-standing tradition of showcasing banned books during this significant week. Our libraries have always dedicated displays to Banned Books Week, she expresses. The celebration of our freedom to read is a focal point, particularly focusing on books that have faced challenges in schools and libraries.

The American Library Association’s list of Most Challenged Books of 2022 demonstrates the diverse range of titles that have been confronted with attempts of banning. These include renowned works such as The Bluest Eye by Lorain native Toni Morrison, Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky.

Fisher notes the surprising reactions sparked by the displayed banned books, stating, People are genuinely taken aback by the books they encounter. The collection features both contemporary titles that highlight the LGBTQ+ community and beloved classics like Where the Wild Things Are. Even the Bible, a book held sacred by many, has faced challenges and finds its place in the display.

The number of challenges to books reached an all-time high last year, marking a worrisome trend. Reasons provided for the attempted bans vary from explicit sexual content to themes related to LGBTQ+ perspectives, sexual abuse, and drug content. Fisher expresses concern over a world where new ideas and different perspectives are shut out, emphasizing that the purpose of libraries is to welcome everyone and celebrate diverse viewpoints. The Lakewood Public Library actively ensures a collection that represents this commitment to inclusivity and freely accessible knowledge.

As we reflect on the unprecedented challenges faced in recent times, it is crucial to appreciate how far society has come. The battle to defend the freedom to read is ongoing, and the role of libraries in this fight is instrumental. Their shelves proudly display literature that encourages exploration of diverse perspectives and fosters a sense of understanding and empathy.

In a world where progress should be unstoppable, let us celebrate the Lakewood Public Library’s dedication to upholding the values of freedom of expression during Banned Books Week. By doing so, we acknowledge the importance of intellectual freedom, diversity, and the power of inclusive literature to shape a brighter future for all.
