Lack of Bicycle Lanes for Commuters from Langa to Cape Town Sparks Advocacy for Sustainable Transport

Every day, a significant number of individuals from Langa commute to Cape Town City Centre for work and school. Around 65 people opt for bicycles as their mode of transport, taking the longer route through Athlone and Mowbray due to the absence of bicycle lanes. The growing number of cyclists has prompted advocacy for sustainable transport and the implementation of the necessary safety infrastructure.

In a joint effort, the Langa Bicycle Hub and the African Climate Alliance (ACA) organized a bicycle trip from Mowbray to Langa, passing through Athlone and Sybrand Park. The aim was to raise awareness about the connection between climate change and spatial injustice and challenge stereotypes associated with the Cape Flats.

The lack of infrastructure for cyclists in the Cape Flats is a significant issue. While the journey from Langa to the city centre by car takes less than 20 minutes, it is considerably longer for cyclists due to the absence of connected bicycle lanes along the N2. The existing infrastructure primarily prioritizes vehicles, disregarding the benefits of safe cycling lanes.

The reliance on public transport among Cape Flats residents has further highlighted the need for improved infrastructure. The recent introduction of the train system has limitations in terms of operational hours and coverage, making it inconvenient for those living on the Cape Flats. Additionally, the lack of MyCiti bus services in certain areas due to conflicts further exacerbates the transportation challenges.

To address these issues, the Langa Bicycle Hub aims to promote cycling as a viable alternative mode of transport. They seek to create job opportunities for young people in the community, enabling them to make deliveries using bicycles. Furthermore, the organization has engaged with government officials to advocate for more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly roads in the area.

Roland Postma, the managing director of Young Urbanists South Africa, emphasizes the need for improved cycling infrastructure. While Cape Town does have cycling lanes, they are fragmented, lack sufficient barriers separating cyclists from cars and taxis, and don’t form a connected network. This has made cycling dangerous and inconvenient.

The lack of reliable state-owned public transport systems, such as buses and trains, also contributes to transportation challenges. Concerns have been raised regarding the punctuality and safety of taxis, buses, and trains, as well as the limited operating hours of bus services. The dependency on taxis and walking remains high, with the majority of people in Cape Town relying on these modes of public transportation.

As the discussions on Cape Town’s transport system and its limitations continue, the hope is that decision-makers will consider reimagining the public transport system. This reimagining should prioritize the negative impact of motorized vehicles and privately owned cars, focusing on affordable and sustainable alternatives that limit emissions and offer better accessibility to all.
