Kelowna City Leaders Address Housing, Mental Health, and Crime at UBCM Convention

Kelowna city leaders are gearing up to tackle critical issues at the upcoming annual Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) convention in Vancouver. With Mayor Tom Dyas, several councillors, and senior staff members in attendance, the city aims to address key concerns such as housing, mental health, and crime. According to Mayor Dyas, participating in the UBCM convention provides a valuable opportunity to engage with other municipal leaders and discuss shared challenges. Issues like the impacts of mental health, addiction, and social issues, as well as crime, public safety, homelessness, and community infrastructure needs, will be on the agenda. The convention serves as a platform for the city’s intergovernmental relations advocacy work, allowing the council to convey Kelowna’s priorities and engage in dialogue with provincial ministers and leaders. Several key priorities have been outlined for the city’s agenda at the convention. These include the need for increased mental health and treatment supports, addressing crime and public safety concerns, addressing transportation and infrastructure needs, and finding solutions to the affordable housing crisis. In addition to participating in discussions, the city is taking the lead in a workshop on AI digital transformation, in collaboration with the City of Victoria, Microsoft Canada, and the Land Title Survey Authority of BC. The UBCM convention will conclude with a keynote address from Premier David Eby on Friday morning. This address is eagerly anticipated, as it will shed light on the government’s perspective and provide insight into the province’s plans to address these pressing issues. Kelowna’s presence at the UBCM convention demonstrates the city’s dedication to proactive problem-solving and collaboration.
