ABA Volunteers Step Up to Assist Maui Wildfire Survivors with Legal Needs
In response to the devastating Maui wildfires in Hawaii, the American Bar Association (ABA) is rallying volunteers to offer their legal expertise and support to the survivors. The fires, which tragically claimed the lives of over 100 people and displaced thousands, have left a trail of destruction and legal challenges in their wake. Recognizing the dire need for legal assistance, the ABA has launched a proactive initiative to help those affected navigate the complex aftermath of this natural disaster.
ABA President Mary Smith underscored the importance of addressing the legal needs that often arise following such calamities. From securing vital FEMA financial benefits to tackling insurance claims and consumer issues like contractor fraud, the ABA is committed to providing crucial legal aid to the survivors.
In collaboration with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Hawaii State Bar Association, and the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, the ABA Young Lawyers Division’s Disaster Legal Services Program is actively offering support to those who require assistance. Services range from helping individuals with the reconstruction of wills and other legal documents destroyed in the fires, to combatting scams and identity theft. Additionally, the program extends aid with landlord/tenant or foreclosure concerns and ensuring individuals with disabilities have access to federal, state, and local disaster programs.
Maui wildfire survivors in qualifying counties, who are unable to afford an attorney, are urged to call the ABA hotline at (888) 533-2773. This telephone service aims to connect individuals in need with experienced legal professionals who can offer guidance on disaster-related legal matters.
For lawyers who wish to contribute to the ABA’s response efforts, the Disaster Relief Pro Bono Portal presents a comprehensive online resource. The portal outlines various opportunities for lawyers to address the legal issues that typically arise in the aftermath of natural disasters. Furthermore, individuals can donate to an ABA fund specifically designated for deploying pro bono attorneys to assist Maui wildfire survivors in their immediate and long-term legal needs.
By mobilizing legal expertise and resources, the ABA volunteers aim to alleviate the burden of legal complexities faced by survivors of the Maui wildfires. The provision of legal services empowers affected individuals to rebuild their lives and find the support they urgently require.
