Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Israeli Students Accuse Palestinian Peers of Supporting Terrorism via Social Media

In the midst of the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, tensions have spilled over into Israeli universities, causing a breakdown of social bonds between Jewish and Palestinian students. Jewish students in Israel are reportedly turning into spies as they scrutinize the social media posts of their Palestinian peers, leading to suspensions and allegations of supporting terrorism without proper verification.

Instances of Israeli students reporting their Palestinian counterparts for social media content related to the conflict have been on the rise. Screenshots of posts, even those depicting civilian casualties in Gaza, have been submitted as evidence. This has resulted in dozens of Palestinian students receiving official emails suspending their studies, accusing them of supporting terrorism or inciting violence, purely based on their online activity.

The situation has escalated to the point where public figures are calling for the revocation of the citizenship of students who express sympathy for Gaza’s Palestinians. Professors who have defended freedom of expression have also faced similar treatment, raising concerns about academic freedom.

Not only are reputations and university places on the line, but the public shaming on social media also risks inciting further violence. Palestinian students, such as Watan Madi from Ben Gurion University, fear for their safety as they face escalating threats and discrimination due to their online posts. Students have reported cases of being threatened with violence or being targeted for their sexual orientation.

Unfortunately, Palestinian students’ grievances are not limited to suspensions or threats. At Jerusalem’s Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, several Palestinian students, constituting approximately 20% of the Palestinian student population, have been suspended without any investigation or prior notice. One student was even arrested. The fear of repercussions has made affected students reluctant to disclose their identities publicly until their cases are resolved.

This disturbing trend of stifling dissent and restricting freedom of expression is heightening the divide in Israeli society. Moreover, it raises concerns about the fairness and impartiality of the academic environment, where all voices should be heard and respected.

While it is crucial to address incitement and ensure the safety of all individuals, it is equally important to maintain an open space for dialogue, understanding, and the exploration of differing perspectives. Striking this balance is necessary to foster a peaceful and inclusive society on Israeli campuses.

Adalah, a legal NGO promoting Palestinian rights, is actively following up on the issue, advocating for fair treatment of affected students. As the conflict continues, it is imperative that efforts are made to deescalate tensions within Israeli universities and promote meaningful dialogue among students, regardless of their backgrounds. There is a need for empathy, understanding, and respect to bridge the divide and create an environment conducive to peace and reconciliation.
