Israeli settlement endangers UNESCO site ecosystem in West Bank

Israeli plans to expand a settlement near the West Bank farming village of Battir could have a devastating impact on the area’s ecosystem, according to environmental groups EcoPeace and the Society for the Protection of Nature. The groups have lodged petitions with Israeli authorities to stop the Har Gilo West project. The expansion aims to create 560 new units, effectively doubling the size of an existing settlement. Campaigners warn that the plan could disrupt water supplies to local farmers and destroy an already under-threat ecosystem. The area was recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2014.
