Israel’s move to order approximately 1.1 million residents of northern Gaza to relocate to the south within a short span of 24 hours has triggered an international response. The United Nations (UN), upon being informed of this directive, has called for the order to be revoked on humanitarian grounds.

According to the UN spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, the Israeli military relayed to UN officials in Gaza that the entire population residing north of Wadi Gaza should swiftly move to the southern part of the territory. This order not only applies to the local populace but also extends to UN staff and those taking shelter in UN facilities such as schools, health centers, and clinics. Consequently, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, is currently providing shelter to over 60 percent of the 423,000 individuals who have been displaced in recent days across the Gaza Strip.

The region’s predicament regarding this relocation order is further compounded because the actual number of people residing north of Wadi Gaza remains uncertain. However, what remains clear is that the United Nations strongly believes that any such movement will have severe and devastating humanitarian consequences for the affected population.

In light of the dire situation, Dujarric passionately stated, The United Nations strongly appeals for any such order, if confirmed, to be rescinded, avoiding what could transform what is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in an escalation of violence, causing immense human suffering and displacement. Hamas gunmen launched attacks on small towns, kibbutzim, and even a music festival in Israel, resulting in the loss of over 1,200 lives and approximately 150 people being held hostage.

In retaliation, Israel has conducted relentless air and artillery strikes on Gaza, which is home to 2.3 million people squeezed into a densely populated enclave. These strikes have led to the destruction of buildings and have claimed the lives of over 1,400 individuals, a significant number of them being civilians.

The gravity of the situation has prompted the Security Council to convene a meeting on Friday to address the conflict and its implications. It is hoped that discussions among key stakeholders will lead to a constructive resolution and a cessation of violence in the region.

Whilst the situation continues to unfold, it is crucial for the international community to prioritize immediate humanitarian support and assistance for the affected population. The well-being and safety of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire must be the primary concern.
