Israel Ignoring Calls for Humanitarian Truce in Gaza, China Accuses
China has accused Israel of disregarding international calls for a humanitarian truce in Gaza, attracting the concerns of the global community. Speaking at the UN Security Council on Monday, China’s UN Ambassador Zhang Jun expressed disappointment with Israel’s decision to escalate military operations in Gaza despite the UN General Assembly’s resolution for an immediate and lasting humanitarian truce.
Referring to Israel’s ground assault and the intensification of military operations, Zhang voiced China’s strong stance on the matter. He urged Israel, as the occupying power, to fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law by lifting its siege on Gaza, withdrawing its emergency evacuation order, and promptly restoring the supply of basic necessities to prevent a humanitarian disaster on a larger scale.
Highlighting the lessons learned from the decades-long Palestinian-Israeli issue, Zhang emphasized that military means are not a solution. China earnestly called on another major country, insinuating the United States, with special influence over the concerned parties, to prioritize ending the war and restoring peace by transcending self-interests and geopolitical considerations.
In the face of the ongoing conflict, the Israeli army expanded its air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip over the weekend, targeting the region that has already endured relentless airstrikes initiated by Hamas. Tragically, the conflict has claimed over 9,800 lives, including 8,306 Palestinians, including over 3,400 children, and 1,538 Israelis.
As the situation in Gaza remains dire, China’s effort to raise these concerns and hold Israel accountable seeks to restore stability and alleviate the suffering of innocent civilians trapped in the conflict. By urging Israel to abide by international humanitarian law and condemning the use of military force, China contributes to the global dialogue surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and calls for a peaceful resolution.
