The Indian state of Manipur has extended its ban on the use of the internet until 25 June due to continued violence. Nearly 100 people have been killed and thousands injured in the state due to violent clashes between ethnic communities since 3 May. The internet ban was put in place to prevent the misuse of social media to spread misinformation or incite further violence. The government has raised concerns about anti-social elements using social media to transmit images, hate speech and hate video messages, which could lead to serious repercussions for law and order in the region. Around 50,000 people are currently staying in government-run relief camps after their houses were burnt down by miscreants.
