MELBOURNE, Australia — The International Organization for Migration has increased its estimate of the death toll from a massive landslide in Papua New Guinea to over 670 as hopes dwindle for finding survivors. The disaster struck Yambali village in Enga province, with more than 150 homes buried under the debris. Rescue efforts have been hindered by unstable ground and tribal fighting, with only a handful of bodies recovered so far. Thousands have been left homeless, with concerns over the safety of relief convoys in the region. The government is considering seeking further international assistance as the scale of the tragedy unfolds.
