New Zealand Initiates Inquest into Christchurch Mosque Massacre Seeking Truth and Prevention of Future Attacks
New Zealand has commenced an inquest into the tragedy that unfolded in March 2019 when a self-proclaimed white supremacist attacked two mosques in Christchurch, resulting in the loss of 51 innocent lives. The proceedings, expected to last six weeks, aim to shed light on the events of that fateful day and explore measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
In her opening statement, Deputy Chief Coroner Brigitte Windley emphasized the importance of honoring the memory of the victims and maintaining a common objective throughout the hearing. The shockwaves from the attacks, which were the deadliest mass shooting in New Zealand’s history, reverberated across the nation. The perpetrator, Australian Brenton Tarrant, was subsequently convicted on multiple charges, including murder and committing a terrorist act, and is now serving a whole-life prison sentence.
The emotionally charged opening session of the inquest was attended by grieving family members and friends of the victims. The ceremony paid tribute to the victims through a traditional Maori welcome, a reading from the Quran, and a poignant video commemorating each individual who tragically lost their lives.
During the inquiry, ten key aspects will be examined, including the emergency services and hospital staff response, potential involvement of other individuals in assisting the attacker, and the causes of death for each victim. However, the findings of the inquest are not expected to be released until 2024.
A harrowing video depicting the gunman’s movements in Christchurch on the day of the attack was shown to observers. The footage, captured using a GoPro camera, revealed the assailant’s methodical journey as he carried out his heinous acts. Armed with semiautomatic weapons, Tarrant first targeted worshippers at the Al Noor Mosque before proceeding to the nearby Linwood Islamic Centre, livestreaming the horrifying events. The victims, who included women, children, and the elderly, were all members of the Muslim community. Two individuals also succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
The inquest aims to analyze various elements concerning the tragedy, such as the response times of the police and emergency services, the effectiveness of medical aid provided at the mosques, the extent of planning assistance received by the attacker, and whether any lives could have been saved.
Maha Galal, spokesperson for the 15 March Whanau Trust representing some of the victims’ relatives, expressed the families’ united pursuit of understanding and emphasized the importance of truth for healing and closure. Families desire clarity on whether their loved ones may have had a chance of survival.
Following the attacks, then-Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern took swift action to implement stricter gun laws and urged social media platforms to address the spread of online extremism.
A subsequent Royal Commission of Inquiry into the shootings revealed that intelligence services had prioritized the threat of Islamist extremist activity, inadvertently diverting attention from far-right threats. While the report acknowledged mistakes were made, it concluded that the attacks could not have been entirely prevented.
Addressing the shortcomings highlighted by the report, Prime Minister Ardern offered an apology on behalf of the government and affirmed the commitment to ensuring the safety of Muslim New Zealanders and all those who call the country home.
