Mumbai (Maharashtra), December 2 (ANI): India’s remarkable achievement in the Chandrayaan-3 mission has been lauded by NASA administrator Bill Nelson, who emphasized the successful landing made by India’s spacecraft on the moon’s south pole. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Nelson acknowledged that India’s accomplishment is unparalleled and deserving of praise. He also highlighted the collaboration between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on the NISAR mission, which aims to establish a comprehensive 3D composite model of Earth to better understand its changes and protect the planet.

Nelson commended India’s milestone in the Chandrayaan-3 mission, expressing his admiration for India being the first country to land successfully around the moon’s south pole. He acknowledged the difficulties faced by other countries in this endeavor but praised India for achieving what others couldn’t.

In addition to the Chandrayaan-3 mission, Nelson discussed the NISAR mission, a joint project between NASA and ISRO. The mission involves the establishment of four major observatories that will construct a complete 3D composite model of Earth. This model will provide valuable insights into the planet’s various surfaces and help researchers understand the changes occurring in its water, land, and ice.

The first observatory in this ambitious endeavor is NISAR, which will observe Earth’s surfaces, capturing any alterations in water, land, and ice. Nelson revealed that the mission is scheduled to launch in the first part of next year and highlighted the collaboration between NASA and ISRO in building the spacecraft. The preparations for the mission are currently underway in Bangalore at the ISRO.

The joint NISAR mission aims to monitor Earth’s forest and wetland ecosystems to investigate their impact on the global carbon cycle and climate change. Equipped with advanced radar systems, the NISAR satellite will conduct scans of Earth’s land and ice surfaces every 12 days, providing valuable data on the capture and release of carbon in these ecosystems.

Nelson also emphasized future plans for NASA’s lunar exploration, stating that the upcoming missions would involve international partners and feature an international crew. He highlighted the importance of commercial efforts in space exploration and expressed optimism for expanded commercial investment from India.

During his visit to India, Nelson also visited the UR Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru, where the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite is undergoing testing before its anticipated launch in 2024. Nelson’s visit underscores the strong collaboration between NASA and India’s space agency.
