India has earned approximately USD 7,400 million over the last ten years through medical tourism, according to officials. Experts predict that this figure will continue to grow and reach USD 43,500 million in the next decade. The health sector in India has seen significant private investment in recent years, which has helped to grow the industry and attract international patients seeking affordable medical care. At the Indian Chamber of Commerce-organised BIMSTEC Health Forum, delegates discussed the inclusion of mental health within overall health, as well as seeking to establish universal health coverage, telemedicine, information sharing, human capital exchange, and collaborative opportunities. BIMSTEC nations have expressed concerns about climate change and medical coordination in both private and public healthcare sectors to effect meaningful changes while considering the environment. Medical tourism, recognised as an export from India and Thailand, could enable a partnership with the Thai government to adopt the West Bengal government’s Swastha Sathi facilities and develop a progressive medical insurance policy. The BIMSTEC is a regional organisation, established in 1997, with a combined population of over 1.68 billion and a GDP of approximately USD 2.88 trillion.
